Calling baby bump he or she??

Has anyone else caught themselves referring to bump as he or she?
I've gotten into a habit of when people ask about them I say "he's so big this week" or "he's due ..." without actually knowing or even having a sense of which I'm having 🙈

When pregnant with number one, before I found out her sex, I used to refer to bump as 'the foetus' and that made people uncomfortable. I think 'it' makes people uncomfortable in English too... as we don't have the 'neutral' gender as prevalent in our language.

So it's pretty normal to want to identify gender as we do that with all things people anyway.

I tried calling bump "they" and everyone thought I was having twins Confused. I started referring to bump as "he" as medics tend to say he to distinguish between bump and mum/she. It turned out he was a he but it was easier referring to bump as he rather than it

@Katie12346 yes literally just had this conversation with my husband! We keep saying he!! X

MsHedgehog · 03/01/2021 17:25

I kept saying he from the very beginning and it turned out I'm having a boy! Could be your instinct picking up on what you're having!

KyraGoose · 03/01/2021 17:29

We gave ours a nickname based on the names we liked. So we just referred to the bump as that.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 03/01/2021 17:32

@KyraGoose haha we call it Sid now!!! My dh said at a scan we had at 7 weeks, it looks like a kidney bean! Then switched to Sidney bean then it's stuck as sid!! I wonder if will continue after the birth!! X

With my first I just said baby all the way through. I was convinced I was having a girl but he was a boy. This time I know she's a girl so I say she (except when talking to my in laws because they don't want to know!)

PurBal · 03/01/2021 17:58

I'm on "it" or "baby" at the moment, neither of which I'm fond of. I agree with PP about "they". I'm working on saying "little one", we'll see how it goes.

PerfectPinecone · 03/01/2021 18:58

I called my bump he quite a few times and have since found out I'm having a girl. No it's usually she or baby

Dyra · 03/01/2021 19:03

I said he throughout my pregnancy although I didn't know what I was having. I did think I was having a boy right the way up to about 35 weeks though.

The sonographer at my 28 week growth scan asked mid-scan if I knew what sex I was having after I'd referred to baby multiple times as "he". In hindsight that should have been a huge clue I was having a girl. Definitely will make a point of mentioning I don't know and don't want to know the sex at all scans for future children.

StaceImpactWfan · 04/01/2021 07:18

I called all 3 of mine he, but this one is a she so now she's either she or baby.

Nat4392 · 04/01/2021 07:35

I refer to mine as “it” or “baby”. I’d think others would just be confused if I used he/she. I’m not finding out how what I’m having so baby is an “it” for a little while!

Dollywilde · 04/01/2021 07:39

DD was just ‘baby’ outside the house but between DH and I she was a combination of the name she has and the name she would have had if a boy (think Wilfabelle if the boys name was Wilfred and the girls name Annabelle) Grin

Next time around we’ll be finding out (helps with whether to keep DD’s clothes, bedroom arrangement etc) and it’ll be so weird having a pregnancy where I’ll know the sex for half of it!

We've starting calling bump whatever my app says it is that week so blueberry or jelly beans 😂 each week I tell hubby what the new one is!

AlwaysLatte · 04/01/2021 08:34

The first one we called Tiny (he's taller than me now!) and the second Bean, so didn't need to say he or she.

Fairywings123 · 04/01/2021 08:34

I did the same as pp, whichever name the app said 😂 but found out at gender scan yesterday were having another boy, so now avocado is a "he" 😊

stickygotstuck · 04/01/2021 08:39

I was desperate to find out the sex for this very reason.

Also, knowing which I was having made it all finally 'real'. Weirdly, I wasn't convinced there was a baby there at all until I was told!

Sceptre86 · 04/01/2021 11:36

We call it munchkin or peanut.

MimiDaisy11 · 04/01/2021 13:05

My partner started referring to it as "junior" which has kind of stuck in how we refer to the baby, but not that's not going to be the name lol
