I've just found out I am expecting, which is wonderful! But as I was trying for so long I had returned to drinking alcohol and even took some strong painkillers before I knew I had conceived! My midwife friend said no harm will have been done, but I'm still worrying!

Does anyone have any similar stories to help relieve my worry?

I would guess that 90% of people have similar stories - I put all my early pregnancy symptoms down to a constant stream of hangovers as I found out over Christmas too and had been thoroughly indulging. Congrats on your pregnancy!

I wouldn't worry! So many people I know didn't find out till 8/10 weeks and had been drinking smoking, one even did a bungee jump 😂
I had drunk quite a few times unknowingly but from research it suggests before 6 the fetus is not receiving anything from you so I'm not worrying too much!

Last new years eve (as in 2019 going into 2020) I drank quite a lot and I was a fairly heavy smoker at the time. I didn't find out until two weeks later that I was pregnant. My DD is now 3 and a half months old! I think that a lot of women unknowingly drink alcohol, eat the wrong food etc without knowing they are pregnant. Of course there is always a risk of something going wrong, but generally speaking as long as it is a one off it isn't enough to cause any serious harm.

Also, congratulations op 💐

During my two week window in August I was off work for two weeks and my thoughts were “well it’s either going to happen or not” this was after a long time of trying.
I partied for the full two weeks, went away for hotels stays and just generally had a good time. I was drinking and smoking the night before my positive. That day I stopped everything but truth be told I think it was my decision to let loose a bit that probably helped.

Think of all the women who weren't trying and then found out after they missed their period... I bet a lot of them had been doing all sorts of things that you aren't supposed to to when you're pregnant!

I am speaking from experience lol.

With my first baby I didn't realise I was pregnant during the first month as I'd had a heavy implantation bleed, which I mistook for my period. I went to a friends for a cheese (all the wrong ones) and wine (lots of it) evening. I am shocked he wasn't pickled. I had the worst hangover ever the following day. Blush Thankfully, all was fine.

I was on the 3rd day of a holiday when I found out I was pregnant. First night I had 6 G&T’s... Second night I had over a bottle of rose... Took the test on the third morning on a hangover! Baby is doing great at 26 weeks. I really wouldn’t worry, your baby isn’t even attached to you via the placenta until about 6 weeks

SnooperTrooper12345 · 02/01/2021 11:10

Baby will not be taking in what you are at the early stages until the placenta attaches properly.
So as the midwife said, no harm done

I didn’t find out I was pregnant until 5 wks with #1. I was on holiday with friends - drinking like a fish. Mistook my morning sickness for hangovers!!! She’s 11 and absolutely perfect (apart from quite a lot of sass which I don’t think is related to my last holiday of freedom!)
