Telling Work - Opinions Please

Hi Everyone!

So I am planning to tell my boss on Monday about my pregnancy. I am only just over 9 weeks but I occasionally have to do lifting as part of my job. Plus, I had to have an early scan last week due to some bleeding (thankfully baby is OK), the EPU has told me to rest and I just think it’s best he is made aware now but kept confidential.

I work for a manufacturing company doing Logistics and currently work 06:30 - 16:00hrs Mon - Thurs (we work longer days and get Friday’s off!) but I have to get up at 5am every morning to get there on time! The problem is at the moment I am suffering with fatigue / tiredness. I can barely make it through the days without a nap and that’s with a good 9 hours or so sleep! The problem I have is I am very much relied on in all aspects of the company I work for (it’s quite a small company). So my days are not only long but also stressful at the best of times. I have worked there for quite a long time now and I guess over time I have been given more and more responsibility (outside of my logistics role) and when I think about it they are taking the p*ss really! The idea of speaking to my boss on Monday is really bugging me at the moment. I work very close to my boss and get on well with him so I am probably worrying for nothing but I am concerned that they will not allow me to work from home.

I worked from home back in March until June and since then have been back in the office as my boss felt as though I was needed on site. I know my circumstances have changed since then and again, I may be blowing this completely out of proportion and it might work out totally fine once I talk to him.

So, currently thinking about how to deal with Monday... I have a good relationship with him in that I could probably call him before Monday and have a good chat with him on the phone but I don’t think it’s fair to interrupt someone’s Christmas break (we’ve been on a company Christmas shutdown). So I am debating whether to either tell him I’m going to come in late on Monday (Drs appointment or something) so I don’t have to get up so early and then talk to him when I get in the office later that day. Or to book Monday as a late holiday day and call him then. This is based on the outcome being work from home on the Tuesday. This might be a really straight forward thing for others to deal with but I am winding myself up with it all. What do you think? xo

I think face to face is always best! Like you said, you have a good relationship with him so it sounds like it will be a really positive conversation. I'm also telling my boss/headteacher on Monday so fingers crossed it goes well for us both... Good luck!

@Dumpling21 Thank you! Yeah I think I know myself that that is probably the best thing to do. I am just worrying about the worst case scenario before it has even happened Hmm story of my life lol! Do you get on well with your boss? All the best with telling he/she on Monday! xo
