Blighted ovum - how long to miscarry?

I had some heavy-ish bleeding a couple of days ago so went to get a scan and it showed I was 5+2 with nothing in the gestational sac. As I'm pretty sure on my dates and know I should have been 6+3 the Dr said it's most likely a blighted ovum.

Anyway the bleeding has now stopped so it doesn't seem like it was the start of a miscarriage (I also didn't feel any cramps and the blood was very runny not like womb lining/period). Does anyone have any experience of how long it takes for the miscarriage to happen? I'm going back on 9th January and would consider surgery at that point but would prefer to avoid it as I would hope that a miscarriage at 6 weeks without an embryo would be like a heavy period and not too bad.

I’m so sorry.

With mine I took the meds straight away, I hated the idea of waiting.

Good luck

Yes I wish I could take the meds and get it over with but I don't live in the UK and they're illegal here.

Hi OP, sorry to hear this. I’ve had 2 of these, 18 years apart. First one was a natural pregnancy, discovered in a scan around the 12 week mark, no bleeding so had a medical intervention. The second was an ivf pregnancy, identified in my 8 week scan (6 weeks ago) and the miscarriage started 8 days after I stopped the progesterone. In both cases it was like a bad period (hot water bottle required first couple of days but ok after that) but at least on the recent one I could tell the difference between standard blood clots and what was actually the product of pregnancy, just to warn you. I did have an appointment for surgical removal for the second one with my body having held onto it for so long the first time, but it started on its own the day after I made the booking.
I hope you’re doing ok emotionally, I’m in a FB group set up for early pregnancy loss if you’d like a recommendation on that front

Hi I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Bleeding started about 10 days later. I wasn't offered medical intervention of any kind. Bleeding was very very heavy and ended up in ambulance and hospital as collapsed with blood loss and I stupidly didn't want to be a burden to NHS or create a fuss so didn't go to hospital earlier - I hadn't been watered by hospital this could happen. I had to sit in bath as kept bleeding through thick pads for hours. Don't want to be alarmist but just be aware.

I’m so sorry, it’s ridiculously hard, and as for the drugs being illegal!!!

I had blighted ovum but it was discovered at my 12 week scan. It took a week for my body to catch up and miscarry x

Plus @whatever1980 said, I ended up haemorrhaging, I did go to hospital though and they intervened so be careful of how heavy the loss is.

Thank you all, I will be aware that blood loss could be heavy and that it could take a while to happen. I wish it would hurry up though as DH is on leave at the moment and can take care of our one year old.

Sorry that so many have experienced this. It's my third pregnancy and second miscarriage. The first a baby did develop and I had surgery as I was travelling a week after the miscarriage was diagnosed, the second was my daughter and the third is this... Emotionally I'm doing ok. I've had heavy bleeding from the start of this pregnancy so I was very sceptical of it working out so it was less of a shock.

So sorry to hear this OP.

My first pregnancy was a blighted ovum and I didn’t find out til I started bleeding at 12 weeks. I had private early scans before and kept getting told it was just too early, when actually the sac was empty. Ended up in hospital almost needing a blood transfusion. Please look after yourself. X
