5 week scan

Hey, I know this is a long shot.

I have a scan tomorrow and I will be 5+4. It's to rule out ectopic but they said they will have a look at everything.

Does anybody have any pictures of scans this early? Or have you got any experience with scans this early?

Anything at all I would appreciate. Just not sure what to expect, if anything.

Im afraid I have no experience of a scan at this stage but one app I’ve downloaded, pregnancy + (with Philips avanti) has a section called imaging in the baby tab and it shows you a scan for each week of the pregnancy, so that may show what to expect. It’s a free app btw! I imagine it will just be a sac and maybe a foetal pole at this stage.

I also think the scans at 5 weeks are transvaginal and you need an empty bladder- hopefully they’ll give you guidance beforehand (you need a full bladder for an abdominal scan).

If you download the pregnancy+ app it shows you what a scan looks like at every week. Also lots of Americans have super early scans so maybe look at some American forums to see what people say. Good luck!

@Thisisbananas3 ahh you got there before me!

There may not be a heartbeat at 5+4, so be prepared for that. I had to got back two weeks later to check the baby was alive (he/she is!). There's also very little to see, literally. The baby is tiny and looks like a kidney bean.

Not at 5+4 but I had a scan at 5+5 after a bleed. As a pp has said, it'll be transvaginal. They were able to see gestational sacs & yoke sacs (it was twins) and could give me the measurements of the sacs to see if they were about right (i.e. what you'd expect at 5 weeks). There were no heartbeats visible.

@elldog6 great minds! I’ve found the app quite useful in general tbh, I like how you see how big the baby is compared to a sweet!

@Thisisbananas3 I know, I love that! I'm finding it so hard to not get attached to that little growing person on the screen as my dating scan isn't until next week but I'm sure I'll be even more obsessed if everything is okay after that!

I was prepared for an internal scan. I had one before with a previous miscarriage, but I was 7 weeks then.

I'll need to download that app! Didn't realise they showed scan pictures.

I was hoping I'd be able to see a sac but wasn't sure if it would be too early.

Will let yous know how it goes!

This was mine the other week at 5+2 - the gestational sac was really clear and they said they could see the start of the yolk sac in the right hand corner ☺️ Not a lot to see at this point but best to rule out ectopic early!

Hi, yes so my first scan was 5 and 3 (also to rule out ectopic) and they saw a gestational sac and yolk sac and they said possibly a fetal pole, it was so tiny you can barely make it out on the scan. Then this week I had a scan at 7 and 3, and baby is visible with a great strong heartbeat (158bpm) and measuring exactly on time. Don’t worry if you don’t see too much..

Just to add I wouldn’t rate the pregnancy+ app for their scan images. I looked at it when I got my 5 week scan and it really upset me thinking I was way behind. Also this is what they use as their 10 week scan image 🙈

@BabyC21 that image looks exactly like lots of 10 week scans I've seen, particularly on various 10 week scan mumsnet threads. Sorry but I don't see what's wrong with it.

@elldog6 ok well it doesn’t look like a single 10 week scan I’ve ever seen. The app also shows a gestational sac at a 3 week scan which I think just leads to worry for people.. highly unrealistic to see a gestational sac at 3 weeks. I had a scan at 4 and 1 where there was nothing but a thickened lining

Well, everything looks great they said!
They can see the yolk sac and fetal pole and mentioned that it looks like it's buried in there nice and deep.
Measuring perfect so far too.

Still early but it's looking a lot healthier than our last pregnancy. Keeping our fingers crossed.
