echogenic bowel in 21 week scan

I have just had my 21 week scan and they have found that my baby has echogenic bowel, although everything else appears normal. Apparently it might be nothing, or the baby may have swallowed some blood, but it might mean that the baby has cystic fybrosis or downs. Now have agonising 10 day wait to see if we are CF carriers, before deciding next step. Has anyone else had this?

No experience onlybananas. It's hard to imagine what you must be going through.

Yes I had something similar. We had a bowel abnormality picked up on 20 week scan & initially thought it was echogenic bowel. We both got tested for CF and I got tested for viral infections. We had another scan which suggested that it wasn't echogenic bowel but a cyst where the bowel had perforated and leaked. It was all really frightening, Dh & I spent a lot of time looking stuff up on the internet & freaking ourselves out.

The wierd thing is it all resolved and follow up scans were normal (as is ds, now a happy 6 month old) and it seems that the 20 week scan can often throw up things like this.

Don't know if that's any use but I can sympathise - it was horrible waiting for test results etc etc.

Not personally, but when on placements in antenatal clinic I have seen 3 or 4 cases of this and of all the ones I saw everything turned out ok, NOT CF or any other problem. Good luck.

Thanks for your messages. Am really trying hard not to get ahead of myself in doom and gloom before we know the outcome of the blood tests - but easier said than done!
