Big head!

At a growth scan today and head is measuring the 87th percentile and femur 26th. What do you guys think of this? Is it too disparate?

2 weeks ago head was 70th and femur 52nd.

I had growth scan 35weeks with one baby who had 75tj centile everything and 9th centile femur.
I was expecting a very unusual child popping out, like a bobble head toy.
They're fine, taller than average if anything.

Did your Dr look bothered?
I'm not sure but I've heard it's hard to really measure correctly.

ivfbeenbusy · 24/12/2020 06:13

Babies tend to grow head down so it's normal for the head to be on a higher percentile than the femur - it's more worrying if it's the other way around

Sixpencefaux · 24/12/2020 08:23

@HooverWhenTheCoastIsClearc No the sonographer wasn’t worried. It is just me and my anxiety and constant googling.

I did the same but it was fine.
I'm sure they'll tell you if it's not.
Try to relax.

My DS head was on the 100th centile. The rest of him on 75th. He's now 15 and very normal, heading towards 6ft. It all balances out in the end. Try not to worry

Mimiwish · 24/12/2020 12:41

My baby has similar measurements and whilst it made me super worried, everyone I've spoken to doesn't seem bothered at all (doctor, my doula etc). They've all told me to lay off Google. I've scoured Mumsnet for similar stories, and have resolved to stop worrying - as should you :) Scan measurements are often a bit out, and it sounds fairly common to have these kinds of stats (I think my last scan may have been even more disparate than yours).
Saying that, was still happy to hear what @ivfbeenbusy says about growing head down!

If it helps, at my 37 week growth scan our little one’s (well, not so little...) head was off the chart 🙈. At 35 weeks his head was measuring at 44 weeks gestation. I’m hoping he’ll balance out as his abdominal circumference is also measuring a bit bigger.

Sixpencefaux · 26/12/2020 11:07

@LockedDownKnockedUp was everything perfectly healthy?

I’m being induced on 6th Jan so keeping everything crossed. The doctors don’t seem concerned at all though so just trusting that they’d have mentioned something if they were concerned. I’m only being induced because my Mum & brother are both T1 diabetics, I’m not diabetic and have had multiple GTTs to check because baba is measuring so big! How many weeks are you?

Sixpencefaux · 26/12/2020 15:30

@LockedDownKnockedUp I am 28 weeks so still a bit to go. I had GTT test too -
Came back negative but close to the threshold.

Aww honestly, the measurements have changed so much over the last few scans. When’s your next one? Our first one said his head was on the 15th centile and now it’s off the chart, I know it’s easier said than done but don’t worry. If they were concerned they would have raised it with you. I googled when I came home from the growth scan at 35 weeks and worried myself sick about his head being so big, but the consultant doesn’t seem concerned (other than it maybe hindering my chances of wanting more kids haha). I’ll let you know how we get on, but please try not to worry. They said little one has talipes on one side too, so I had been worrying about that and then when I went for the 32 weeks scan they weren’t so sure. Scans can only tell us so much 😊xx

PenguinHuddle · 26/12/2020 15:40

My DS had high percentiles for all measurements except femur which was smaller than average. But my DH and I both have long backs and shorter legs for our height. My son is the same. He has a long torso and slightly shorter legs, but perfectly normal.

Sixpencefaux · 26/12/2020 17:34

@LockedDownKnockedUp good luck with everything and please let me know how you get on. Would be great to hear! X

Hi, I have similar measurements at my scans - overall growth in on the 10th line but legs are on the 3rd and head is nearly 100th.

My consultant checked the scan and he didn't mentioned anything to be concerned by.

My sonographer did ask if my partner was tall and didn't say much else?

Seeing midwife this week so going to ask.

I am expecting a big head though - my first was born with average weight and above ave head size. My partner and I both have big heads (based on hat sizes).

So am prepared!
