Early Scan - Very Confused on Dates!

Hello!

I've read a quite a few threads on here about this subject but just wanted some advice following an early scan yesterday (19th December). I had an early scan as I am a natural worrier and wanted a bit of reassurance that everything was ok as this is our first pregnancy.

I've added the relevant details below:
First day LMP: 28th October
Positive Pregnancy Test: 28th November (this was 2 x First Response and 2 x Clear Blue which both said 2-3 weeks pregnant)
Date per LMP: 7 weeks 3 days
Date at Scan: 5 weeks 5 days

The scan showed a yolk sac and we could also see a heart beating but the sonographer said I was earlier than I thought and only around 6 weeks (scan says 5 weeks 5 days). She asked if I had longer cycles which I have done (usually around 32 days) and didn't point out anything to be wrong. However, she wasn't the most friendly person at all and seemed annoyed that my bladder wasn't full enough and I needed an internal scan (which I thought would have generally been required anyway pre 10 weeks) and it all seemed quite rushed.

I got my positive pregnancy tests 3 weeks before the scan so even with a longer cycle the dates don't appear to add up? Or have I got this wrong?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated!! :)

So did she do the measurements internally or externally? It's so small in there that there is a margin for error which could make a day or twos difference.

Without knowing an exact date for ovulation it's hard to say - usually measuring up to a week behind is ok and often has good outcome but longer than that could go either way but hard to say without knowing ovulation dates x

Thank you for replying :)

She did it internally. I had been tracking my ovulation using Clear Blue but stupidly didn't record the date I had the fixed smiley face and now can't remember it exactly.

Going by my LMP im 11+5 but i had a private scan at what i thought was 8+1 but was measured at 7 weeks and again a few moments later and she got 7+2, i think it is fairly common this early to be measuring behind but usually by 12 weeks you will have caught up. I have my 12 scan on thursday when i should be 12+2. I also got moaned at for not having a full bladder but i do really struggle to hold my pee so i couldnt help going to the loo before it, its making me nervous for my nhs scan 🙈

Thank you so much - that's reassuring!

Also glad to know it wasn't just me on the bladder front, I hadn't gone to the loo but drank 2 glasses before but must have been too late or not enough :/

Good luck for Thursday, I'm sure you'll be fine! :)

Just wanted to update this in case anyone finds themselves in a similar position - I had another scan today (1 week 2 days later) and I’m very happy to say that the baby has grown quite a lot, now measuring almost 3 times the size and at 7 weeks 4 days with a good strong heartbeat :) Still a little behind what we originally thought but I do have a long cycle and it’s now a week behind rather than 2!

I appreciate it’s very hard to measure and date an early pregnancy accurately but this really did help to put my mind at rest.

I went to a different place and they were so much more personable and reassuring! Even from the fact they had a screen to get changed and covered with it being an internal scan (which I would’ve expected in the first place but they didn’t have this!) so would definitely recommend trying somewhere else if you don’t have a great experience as the two were very different.

Aw im so glad fo hear this! I had my 12 week scan on xmas eve and at what i thought was 12 weeks and 2 days i was only measuring 11 weeks and 4 days so going by my early scan its correct and only put me back 5 days, but baby was jumping about it was amazing to see 🥰

Good to read your update, a mm or two out can change thing hugely.

I have long cycles and my due date was moved back 9 or 10 days with my first at the 12 week scan which I sort of agreed with. Waters broke 9 days before due date and DD was born a week early. With my 2nd they didn't change the dates and I went very overdue. She would have been around due date if they adjusted.
