19 weeks ... reflux making me miserable!

Hi,

I’m 19 weeks pregnant I threw up blood a couple of weeks ago and the doctor provided me with omeprazole. So far it has not helped. No matter what I eat I get constant indigestion and heartburn, every time I drink I burp and it comes back up my throat into my mouth. It’s making me so miserable! Is anyone else experiencing this? I’m worried it is something serious but the doctor just thinks it’s pregnancy related.

If you do have it, is there anything that helps?

@Emz012019 sorry dear, I am 20 weeks gone. The indigestion and constipation is normal but since the doctor said that vomiting with blood will pass, just pray and wait a little more. You will be fine

How long have you been taking the omeprazole? It does wonders for me but does take a bit of time to kick in, if it's still bad maybe ask the doctor for something stronger like ranitidine Smile

I'm much earlier than you too (8weeks) but have had awful reflux. I got it a little prior to finding out, but I've got it as bad as you describe now. Literally after anything I eat or drink. I've found that if I chew on an airwave, it somehow stops it for a good while! No idea how or why, maybe the mint helps settle the acid? I can't promise it will work for you, but this last week it has been an absolute god send for me!!

Emz012019 · 18/12/2020 16:20

Well he didn’t seem concerned about the blood unless it happens again but it really worried me has it happened to anyone else?

@lucymagoo I’ve been taking it for about 2 weeks now 20mg not sure if they can up it or not.

@22ELF22 really?! I will be getting some tonight to try it 🙈 I’ll try anything right now it’s awful lol

Yogurt, eat loads of it, the coldness helps and the bacteria helps too and take a prebiotic to feed those bacteria.

Told to me by a lovely Indian doctor whilst vomiting blood and acid over the toilet whilst systematically peeing myself with each retch.

It really does work.

LittleTiger007 · 18/12/2020 17:36

Thanks twinkle I will try the yoghurt. I’m 18 weeks and reflux has suddenly become a thing

I'm struggling with this too, doesn't help I take aspirin. It's horrible, really ruins my evenings and I just don't want to eat or drink anything as it always comes back on me! I just started taking omeprazole so hopefully that helps! You can double the dose if needed but speak to the gp, also just a side note ranitidine was recalled as is no longer supplied.

I struggle so much with this and did pre pregnancy- it’s horrendous and when you have it ugh it’s just the worst.
I had a bit of a break from it but I’m now nearly 25 weeks and it’s back with a vengeance.
I am on 40mg of omeprazole. This is the max dose. I take one 20mg in a morn and one in an eve. I have rennies or gaviscon on hand at all time and if I have a biggish meal I’ll pop one or two after. Try avoid big meals though and I know it’s hard but read the GERD diet. It’s very plain and bland but I am having to stick to this now to keep pain away! As I say it’s boring but so worth it not to have such painful heartburn!
Ginger and honey tea. I use fresh ginger and have this 2-3 times a day. Just chopped up into hot water. Soothes everything and ginger reduces the amount of acid produced.
Make sure you try sleep only on your left side. Because how your stomach sits this means acid struggles to come back up if you lie this side.. which is handy because in pregnancy they recommend the left side anyway. I’m at a point now where I have to sit almost upright to sleep though! I find my symptoms are bad also when my stomach is empty so a 2am trip to the kitchen for a pear or banana isn’t unusual for me but depends when your symptoms are bad! Good luck!
