I'm not sure if my waters just broke...

So, slightly embarrassing but I'd just been for a pee, wiped, stood up and as I turned to flush had a small trickle of liquid run down my legs. (it was enough to run quite quickly and hit the floor)

Now I'm pretty sure it's not pee as I'd just emptied and wiped. The liquid was a very very pale yellow though, but no pee smell from what I can tell.

It was quite a small amount so I'm thinking stick a pad in and see if any more comes out over the next hour or so?

What was it like when your waters broke? With my first they were burst for me and it was like a water fall, gush of really warm water that soaked the place.

I'm 32 weeks.

I'm still on the phone to them, she's going to check with a senior midwife too

Mine broke prematurely at 35w and it was just a trickle down my leg as I was standing up at work!

The hospital kept saying on the phone that it was probably bladder leakage, but when they examined me, they confirmed ruptured membranes.

It smelt of Milton sterilising fluid!

Overfullwardrobe · 17/12/2020 21:59

I had exactly the same experience at 28 weeks, and it turned out it was my waters breaking. Two weeks of bed rest in hospital and DS1 was born at 30 weeks. Now a strapping 13 year old!

Spanglebangle · 17/12/2020 22:00

My first was a slow leak. If you have a pad in and it keeps getting wet then it's waters. In my experience waters smell like male cum... Tmi sorry!

I went to the maternity unit and to check they got me to lie flat on my back for 5 minutes then sit up to see if anything came out. It did so they said it was waters. I was given 72 hours to go into labour naturally or they would induce. I did go into labour. I was 38 weeks. Not sure what they would do at 32.

OnNaturesCourse · 17/12/2020 22:02

I have had crazy amounts of discharge this pregnancy and I'm still getting that but I assume waters would be well more watery?

My waters went at home... heard and felt a pop, ran to the bathroom and it gushed out, litres of the stuff. Was appeared mainly clear like water, but on a pad had a pinky tinge. Smelt "sweet" is all I can describe it as!? Good luck op

williowrosenburg · 17/12/2020 22:08

Mine was a trickle. Stood in the kitchen and thought ooo I'm wetting myself .... but it was my waters slowly trickling.
Sit on a bath towel for while and see if anymore leaks out. It will just keep going and going if it's your waters.

I was 37 weeks and had no contractions so was "leaking" for 2 days before I was induced, that was great fun!

I think I remember the midwifes saying waters are the colour of straw? Which I guess doesn't help as could be confused with urine!

stackhead · 17/12/2020 22:11

Mine started leaking at 34 weeks (officially - looking back I think it started a bit earlier). Waters smell sweet. Pear drop sweet, it's quite distinctive.

Directionerforever · 17/12/2020 22:13

Liquor smells like sex. Put a pad on and lie down, if your waters have gone you should get some pooling. But tbh the only way you’re going to get a definitive answer is to go into the hospital. Can you not just pop in yourself rather than get parents etc over? You do really need to know whether they’ve gone or not.

SinkGirl · 17/12/2020 22:15

At 32 weeks I would be getting checked out.

Here’s what happened with me - I was 35 weeks exactly and had a very similar experience - a small amount relatively but it came out at a similar rate and hit the floor. A bit more in my underwear but
then put a pad in and nothing. As it had stopped I went to bed - I had a midwife appointment at home the next day. I had a rough night of just not feeling well - headache etc. Midwife came round and explained that the head can act a bit like a plug so you can lose some and then it stops. She booked me in to get checked out at 5:30pm

By the time I got there one of my twins wasn’t moving and I had an Emcs right away.

I never would have gone in off my own back as I thought it was nothing, honestly. I still don’t fully understand what happened but going in when I did was crucial.

Obviously I had twins so couldn’t tell that one wasn’t moving while the other was doing backflips basically but definitely keep a close eye on movements and if you have any other symptoms or concerns then call them back. And if you don’t go tonight call your midwife first thing tomorrow, but I would go and get checked over if you can.

This isn’t intended to be scaremongering, just my experience. I was definitely a “I don’t want to be a bother” person but I have learnt my lesson. If it is your waters then they need to know about it at this stage.

MaryShelleysDracula · 17/12/2020 22:16

Mine popped 2 days before my ELCS at bang on 39 weeks and I felt a pop and then a full feeling like when you wake up and have come on your period overnight. It didn't spill out onto the bed but when I ran to the loo it looked and felt like I was wetting myself. There were only a few drips over the floor but it felt way, way more. It smelt as a pp has said (sorry!) like cum.
I walked to the hospital as it's closer to walk than drive (3 min walk) and I had a maternity pad on, it felt like I was uncontrollably wetting myself and I was convinced the pad would be saturated and that my tracksuit bottoms would be saturated but they weren't, it just felt like I was losing a lot of water. Go and be seen asap, it's different for everyone and it's better safe than sorry.

OnNaturesCourse · 17/12/2020 22:17

I'm home myself so unfortunately not.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. Midwife unit happy to keep me at home unless I get more, or contractions start. With the pressure feeling of water the past few days it sounds like baby is sitting on my bladder and it could be causing issues emptying it completely.

Moltenpink · 17/12/2020 22:18

Trust yourself, if you don’t think it was urine it’s very unlikely that it was.

NoUseNumber31 · 17/12/2020 22:21

I had exactly the same, it was my waters and was induced the next day!
I see you've been given advice but I would be keeping a very close eye just in case.
Good luck!

OnNaturesCourse · 17/12/2020 22:23

It happened after you'd been to the loo?

Embolio · 17/12/2020 22:25

My waters went at 32 weeks with ds2 - big gush & unmistakable, it's not always like that though.

I would expect waters to keep leaking, but go and get checked, definitely in the morning if not tonight, even if you don't get anything further. Better to be safe.

MaryShelleysDracula · 17/12/2020 22:27

Give it until the morning OP, as long as baby is still moving (not unusually more/ less though!) and maybe don't keep a pad on other than a normal sanitary towel/ panty liner so you can actually tell if you're leaking and if so what it looks/ smells like. If you're using maternity pads you won't always know, they absorb A LOT. Then tomorrow arrange a plan for parents/ partner to look after your child while you attend to get checked out. Warn everyone though that you may need babysitting urgently overnight if you start having contractions or more water leakage as you really should get checked out in that case.

crochetcrazy1978 · 17/12/2020 22:27

I had similar experience at 30 weeks. Spoke to the midwives and they said to come in to be checked. Was there with legs akimbo with two midwives staring up my chuff. One had a headlamp on like she was going down blue John cavern 😂. After about 10 mins of this they came to the conclusion I'd just wet myself. Oh the dignity 😂. Just keep an eye on it and watch how you're feeling and movements etc and keep a pad on as they can test the pad I think x

emwithme · 17/12/2020 22:33

Mine went after I'd been to the loo in the middle of the night - I stood up, turned round to flush and wash my hands and SPLOSH. It smelled like a mix between bleach and sex - such a distinctive smell.

myhobbyisouting · 17/12/2020 22:36

Well mine trickled slowly out like that over time apparently. I didn't notice at all

Get checked

OnNaturesCourse · 17/12/2020 22:38

@emwithme mmm that sounds familiar!

I so hope it's not the start of things, far too early.

This is the RCOG advice - it says premature rupture of membranes be just a trickle or a gush, and if you think your waters may have broken prematurely you should be checked out right away. Bit worrying you’ve had different advice - I would want to be checked out, but obviously this is your decision. If you don’t go tonight then definitely tell your midwife in the morning.

www.rcog.org.uk/en/patients/patient-leaflets/when-your-waters-break-prematurely/

Personally I wouldn’t wear a pad if it’s only a small amount because if you’re only leaking a little bit the pad will just absorb it and you won’t notice. Clean underwear, check if it’s damp after 30 mins, and repeat - you’ll be able to tell more easily.

Really hope all is okay. Just worried that some have advised that if it’s waters it will definitely continue when that’s not always the case.

NoUseNumber31 · 17/12/2020 22:40

@OnNaturesCourse

It happened after you'd been to the loo?
Yes...I woke up, went for a wee stood up and there was a trickle. Put a pad in and it happened again a few hours later after I'd been for another wee. I was convinced I'd wet myself but thought I would get checked out anyway. It was my hind waters that baby had poked at. I was 38 weeks.
Mrsmummy90 · 17/12/2020 22:44

With both DCs, I had a pop and a gush that kept on gushing until they were born.
I found that the waters smelled like semen 😂🙊

OnNaturesCourse · 17/12/2020 22:45

I wear liner pads daily even outside of pregnancy because of discharge so going without one isn't going to happen. I do only have a liner in tho, as I haven't even bought maternity pads yet.

I'm currently lying down and will see if anything pools. I've decided if I get another experience like that I'll take myself in to the unit.
