Negative pregnancy test at 10 weeks

Hello!

Just looking for some similar experiences or any advice.

I got a positive test result 8 weeks or so ago. NHS calculator has me at 10 weeks. Had some bleeding and cramping at around 5/6 weeks but both midwife and gp didn’t seem concerned at all. Was a bit worried I’d miscarried. But then my symptoms went through the roof. Nausea, headaches, really bad bloating.
Had my booking app with midwife today and told her everything and again no concern showing. Said it sounds like implantation bleeding. But I did another pregnancy test today and it’s negative. So confused. Have a private scan on Saturday and really anxious about what to expect. Anyone had anything similar happen? Could I be pregnant still. Thanks

I’ve read before after a certain time you can get negatives on tests because your hcg is so high

Hunnihun2 · 15/12/2020 18:55

I hope all is OK op I’ll be following good luck for sat!

SunnySideUp2020 · 15/12/2020 19:05

The only reason your test could be negative so late would be hcg decreasing as placenta taking over but i don't think this happens at 10 weeks.
I hope it will still be good news for you at your scan 🙏

This is odd at 10 weeks. Did you test in between at all? If so what were the tests like?

When you had cramping and bleeding, what was the bleeding like and did you check your pad, did you have any clots or anything?

NatMc89 · 15/12/2020 19:14

I did test in between and came back positive every time. Haven’t tested for about 3 weeks before today. The blood was never heavy just spotting and mostly brown like old looking blood and twice I had a very small amount of fresh blood when I wiped. Cramps were never strong enough to take any painkillers but one night I did have a really painful feeling in my hip.

But it’s all so odd because my symptoms have definitely got worse and my clothes are starting to feel tight. I’m aware the worst could have happened but getting a mix of signals.

Twins do run in my family and I’m wondering if my hcg levels could be super high because of this so the home test isn’t detecting it? I’ve read somewhere that can happen?

If you dilute your wee and test then see what happens.

My next question was about twins. Yes, and yes, in answer to your question. It may have risen above the home-test level.

FWIW, I had 3 MCs including 2 missed MCs and I had symptoms right up till the end, so having or not having symptoms isn't really going to tell you anything.

More importantly you tested positive in between and this may well be a good sign.

Mimba1 · 15/12/2020 19:34

I've never experienced it personally but you could look up the "hook effect". Apparently sometimes HCG levels get so high that they don't get detected. I think you can test diluted urine to get a +ve result again.

FWIW I've had 2MCs (8 wks and 9 wks) and neither were like what you are describing. One had only developed to 5wks so really tiny baby but in both cases I passed biggish clots and had positive pregnancy tests for 2+ weeks after the bleeding started. I don't think it's likely that you would've already completed a MC with the amount of bleeding you describe. And if the MC wasn't complete you would still be producing HCG (so testing +ve).

elldog6 · 15/12/2020 19:38

How did you manage to get a positive at 2 weeks? Sorry for my ignorance but how did you test that early?

Mrsi2020 · 15/12/2020 19:40

Hope all turns out ok!

@elldog6 I imagine she means 2 weeks on a digi or from conception which would have made her 4 weeks preg which is usually when you get a bfp, that’s what I thought when I read 2 weeks xx

PurplePansy05 · 15/12/2020 19:44

Ah yeah, the numbers don't really add up here, if you had a bfp 8 weeks ago then youreat least 12 weeks OP?

NatMc89 · 15/12/2020 19:50

Sorry for the confusion guys! Meant to say around 6 weeks ago I got my positive. It was Saturday the 6th of November I got my first positive.

What's your plan, OP? Have you got a scan booked? Are you going to do another test?

NatMc89 · 16/12/2020 08:35

Scan on Saturday. Just going to wait until then. Feel like I’ll go mad if I keep doing tests. Woke up again with morning sickness today Confused

MsFrog · 16/12/2020 08:51

It must be driving you mad, yes! It's such a strange thing - hopefully of PPs have said, it'll be the hook effect. Not long to wait now, hope you're bearing up alright. Morning sickness is a good sign 👍🤞

Mrsi2020 · 16/12/2020 09:15

Ring the clinic and bring your scan forward?! Xx
