Hi ladies

Not sure if someone has any advice or guidance on metformin.. I take 3 tablets everyday after food.. my understanding is that with the tablet it should control your sugar if it is high? Last few days my sugar has been high here on different days.. today I ate something I’ve had before and my sugar was okay.. but for some reason today it’s gone high...

Do you have diabetes or been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and is that why you are taking Metformin? It is used to lower your blood sugar. If you have high blood sugars and not hitting your targets while being pregnant, you need to get in touch with your diabetic midwife. High blood sugars can lead to all sorts of serious complications in pregnancy including still birth so needs to be tightly controlled. I'm a T1 diabetic and never controlled my blood sugars as tightly as i have been since i found out i was pregnant.

I’ve just had my baby 5 days ago but got diagnosed as GD at 28wks. I ended up taking x3 metaformin daily x1 with breakfast and x2 with evening meal. My levels in beginning were not too high but still over target and I was eating things that shouldn’t cause issues but did. I was just advised that this is how diabetes can be like and just try to eliminate things that don’t work for you.

I made sure only ate brown bread instead of white, ate fresh fruit but not fruit juice. Stopped eating rice as that always affected my levels and although I seemed to be fine with any pasta I tried to have wholewheat just to try and prevent it becoming an issue. I’m not too bothered about sweet stuff and from beginning of my pregnancy I went off chocolate but I used to buy low cal jelly and sugar free biscuits for if I fancied something sweet. I was fine with low fat yogurts too.

Being diagnosed is upsetting and scary and I spent my whole pregnancy worried about what might happen but all turned out fine so remember they are trying to just eliminate issues rather than it be you will end up with those issues. My baby had grown along 10th centile which they considered small and possibility that placenta might fail and they even talked about shoulder dystocia which scared life out of me.

I was offered induction at 38wks but felt too early and wanted to wait so an agreement was 39+1. Induction worked and I gave birth easily to a 7lb3oz baby.
