Hi everyone,

This may sound like a stupid question, but this is my first pregnancy and different websites say different things.... basically I am wondering, is peppermint tea safe to drink in the first trimester? Before I got pregnant I would drink it quite often for bloating, but I have read to avoid it in the first trimester as it can cause uterine contractions and even miscarriage?! But then some websites say it’s safe... I’m just very confused Confused and I forgot to ask my midwife at my last appointment!

@Dawn2202 oh gosh, I'd be interested to know this too! I love peppermint tea and tend to have two a day. Hopefully someone can shed some light if not we should probably check with our GPs. 😳 x

I am now 12 weeks, and I read the same after drinking it quite happily for a week or so, and then suddenly thought I best check. I was so upset thinking I might have caused a pregnancy loss. (hormones) I stopped immediately. Forgot to ask the midwife at 8 week check. But fortunately my two weeks at between 4&5 weeks pregnant hasn't caused any damage to my ever growing bump. I would err on the side of caution though and stop until you have spoken to your midwife or gp.

I'm pretty sure NHS website says no more than four cups of herbal tea a day.

No more than 4 cups a day as per NHS guidelines. I drink peppermint tea every night as it massively helps with bloating. I've never heard of peppermint tea causing contractions but I know lots of people who drink raspberry leaf tea in the final stages of pregnancy as that supposedly has benefits.

I avoided it in the first trimester as it just didn’t seem worth the risk to me
