This was a picture from my 6 week scan, on all the photos there appears to be a white line shadow almost (I have tried to highlight it with arrows).

Is this normally there and what is it?

Thank you x

I wouldn't worry. I think you're overthinking it.

Bella678 · 25/11/2020 23:47

Literally can't see what u mean 😬

Wherethereshope · 26/11/2020 03:44

I'm not sure what you mean, but there's also white areas at the top. Try not to worry.

Maybe read about what happens as there's a lot of change in the early weeks going from being a cell type structure to forming with a sac, and the development of the placenta.

bumpsadaisy11 · 26/11/2020 03:47

Umbilical cord?

Wherethereshope · 26/11/2020 03:47

Ps.. Download the babycentre app, you get an image of what baby and the other structures look like. I've just looked at week 6 and I think you'll see what it is you're seeing 😊

Aprilbaby21 · 26/11/2020 16:18

I think i see what you mean but isnt that just the yolk sac?

SnarkWeek · 26/11/2020 16:51

It’s the amniotic sac. At this stage the big black space in your uterus is the amniotic cavity, the sac is much smaller and sits quite closely around the embryo. Over time the sac will grow with the embryo and eventually fill the cavity

SnarkWeek · 26/11/2020 16:53

This is my 8 week scan, it’s a lot clearer

@SnarkWeek that scan picture is amazing. I never actually thought that obviously the sac doesn't fill up the whole uterus in the beginning. I just always thought the black was the fluids 🤦‍♀️ but it's so obvious now!

SnarkWeek · 26/11/2020 17:22

Thanks Babyfg it’s really nice and clear isn’t it! The white circle touching the embryo on the right is the yolk sac, it’s like a perfect little teaching aid Smile

To be fair, this scan was taken because at our 7 week scan (IVF pregnancy) they couldn’t see the foetal pole, so we had to come back a week later. I spent the whole time convinced I was about to miscarry at any moment. So I am not ashamed of being incredibly proud of this beautiful little bean!

Babyfg · 26/11/2020 22:11

@SnarkWeek I was thinking the same that I bet they could use that for a medical textbook! Definitely be proud of it! I'm glad it has worked out well and your little bean has thought me something along the way ❤️

xx11xx · 26/11/2020 22:46

Thank you everyone, the sack explanation makes a lot of sense ❤️

Thank you for this thread, I never realised the sac is smaller and visible on a scan! Just went back to check my pictures and it's like suddenly seeing something new on a picture I know so well. The 8 week scan of DD shows her floating inside a perfectly round bubble, wow :D
