First scan - baby in funny position / gassy bowels

Hello everyone,

I had my 12 week scan last week and the baby was laying in a ‘funny position’ and my bowels were ‘gassy’ (lovely, I know!) so it made it difficult to see.

They said it all looks fine, but they couldn’t do the test for Down’s syndrome because they couldn’t get to look at the neck. So I’ve got to wait until 16 weeks to have blood tests then.

I just wondered if anyone else experienced this at their first scan? I went for a walk to try and get the baby to move but it didn’t work. I’ve got a picture but it just looks like a bit like a blob fish lol. I wasn’t too worried but now I’ve had time to think about it I’m scared something will be wrong that they couldn’t see so I’ll find out at the next scan, which will likely be a private one before 20 weeks as I’m not sure I can wait that long.

I’m just after some reassurance - this is my first baby and I was doing well not worrying too much up until now! ☺️

OP I had the same! Actually they couldn't get any measurements at my 12 week scan and I had to go back a week later armed with cold water and sugary sweets. It was all fine in the end, my baby is a few months old now.

I did! Baby was in an awkward position.... and I think my bladder was too full as baby was totally squashed up in such a strange position. They couldn't take NT measurement or really do very much at all- I didn't even get a picture to take away because the scan was so unrecognisable! I went back a week later for a re-scan (they offered me this at the time) - all good and baby was more compliant (albeit not entirely still!)

Private clinics also do dating/NT scans if you're willing to pay and really want to. If you do, try to find a reputable one though and not one of the Window to the Womb or other chains of babyscan providers that have recently been quite discredited in the news!

Thank you both! They could take the measurement and it seemed to fit with my dates so all seems fine then. I think I am going to book a private one for in a few weeks time to check it’s all okay still. I hadn’t heard about any issues with window to the womb @MummyOfZog so I’ll look into that. Thanks for the heads up - that’s one closest to me so I know to avoid!
