Has anyone had a LONGER second labour?

Dc2 is due on Sunday so obviously I'm preparing myself for labour! DC1 only took 3 hours to make his appearance and I know the general saying is that labour is quicker second time round, but has anyone had a longer second/subsequent labour, or do I need to tell my DP to get ready to catch?! 😂

Yes, it could be quite quick. My 3rd was the fastest (1h 45m) so I was not prepared for 4h with number 4. I don’t even know how long number 5 took. Maybe 2.5-3h? Due today with number 6. Anything could happen (but I’m planning on staying at home). Good luck!

I can't really answer as I'm pregnant with 2nd one, I do hope it's quicker, easier and a good experience overall! Although......there's a 14 years gap, so when I think about it, I'm slightly worried....can such a big gap can have effect on labour's length?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/11/2020 09:32

Yes!
My first was 4hrs on just gas and air.
My second (last month) was not what I expected at all, I arrived already 5cms and thought it would be “easy”. Then contractions stalled, waters were blocking the babies head coming down- took 13 hrs and an epidural.

Takethereigns · 25/11/2020 09:38

3 and a half hours for the first.
The second was documented as 33 minutes, but I was having contractions on and off for the previous 12 hours.

Due today so following this with interest!!

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 25/11/2020 09:45

Yes!! 82 hours stuck at 4cms with contractions every minute.
12 hours from first contraction to giving birth the second.
20 mins with the 3rd, what they count as actual labour may have been 5 mins. I don't know as I was checked at 2cms but they said I was way off but didn't send me home as the pain was intense. DP took opportunity to go toilet, he was then called out as I wanted to push! The midwives said I was wrong as there is no way I could. Checked over again and was crowning. 2 pushes later my baby was in my arms.

My first was induced 1.45hr from start to finish.
10years later my 2nd contractions started about 5am but not very strong, about 2.45 they broke my waters she was out at 3pm.
Good luck all of you on your upcoming labour/births

Alexandernevermind · 25/11/2020 10:34

So exciting for you! Mine were both the same at 14 hours (so I envy you).

JChina · 25/11/2020 11:59

First baby was 12 hours start to finish (waters went) but active labour was only 3 hours long.
Second baby was a whopping 27 hours start to finish (start being a bloody show and some mild cramps) he was a much bigger baby in a really awkward position so I wonder if that was part of it. Anything can happen!

Artus · 25/11/2020 12:07

Yes! First labour 9 hours from waters breaking, about 4 hours active labour.

Second about 17 hours from waters going. About 12 hours active labour. And much more painful, probably because of the baby's position.

But statistically that's unusual, most second labours are quicker.

Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone. I hope all goes smoothly for those of you whose little ones are due the next few days!

My 1st was 17.5hrs, 2nd was about an hour and a half from waking with contractions to having him within minutes of arriving in the hospital. I was in very advanced labour during the drive and OH was absolutely petrified he was going to have to help with delivery in the car lol

JiltedJohnsJulie · 25/11/2020 13:42

Not me, first was around 8 hours, second was less than 4 hours and was bigger too.

Queenbee95 · 25/11/2020 15:19

First was 24 hours active
Second 6 hours active

Hoping 3rd will be just as quick as 2nd!
