ovarian cyst in pregnancy

I had my scan yesterday at 11+4
Healthy looking baby wriggling around but a cyst on right ovary . Large in size .
Screenshot says the size.
Basically a doctor explained that it's a corpus luteum cyst that has grown a bit larger than they would like to see. It will either go away , stay the same or get bigger they can't say but they expect it to shrink as my placenta starts to take over which I think is very soon ?
Apparently no solid masses and its all filled with blood. It needs monitoring though so I'll be scanned again at 18 weeks and to report to ante natal clinic if any pain from that side .

I am so worried though. I'm scared it will twist on the ovary etc
They said right now it's essentially feeding my pregnancy so they would only consider removal if it twisted or I was in a lot of pain .
And they would want to wait until mid 2nd trimester to make sure the placenta is fully taken over in supporting the pregnancy.

I had one in my first pregnancy but it was smaller at around 6cm I think s
. I don't remember what happened to it tbh.
This is a whopper at 8.5cm!

I just want to enjoy the good news that my baby was ok but I'm finding this really hard .

Has anyone any experience? I'm terrified it will grow and be larger at next scan

Hi @toptreeroots1

I have a simple cyst in my left ovary and had my follow up appointment today at 16w 5d and it's shrunk a touch from 8cm to 7cm - I was told by the consultant they'll essentially leave it until after baby is here (I'm not in any pain and actually wouldn't have known it was there if it hadn't been for baby). Unless I happen to have a section, they'd drain it then. (2 birds 1 stone I guess!)

I had the added complication that I only have 1 tube following an ectopic pregnancy so I was worried it's twist and I'd lose my left ovary where my remaining tube is! Consultant still didn't seem phased.

Not sure if this helps! But 4 weeks ago I was in a similar position to you and couldn't find any similar stories so didn't want to run without commenting.

I'm glad it's causing no issues
My doctor said yes chance of twisting etc but she thinks more chance it will resolve.
As placenta has not taken over fully yet and they would not want to remove ATM due to it supporting my pregnancy I feel terrified it will twist soon etc.
I can't find much online about it either .
Annoyed this has happened again but I can't remember what happened last time so that's probably a good thing as it was obviously all ok.
I was shocked by the size of it considering I'm in no pain

Yeah it's funny these things are going on inside and you can have no idea!

I keep trying to tell myself, there is literally nothing I can to avoid it growing or shrinking. It'll do what it wants to do. I can. It fault the care I am getting from the NHS, and the consultant today was lovely!

Fingers crossed it just happens to disappear naturally after it's done the job of supporting baby! X

I hope so.
I didn't even know 48 hours ago
For all I know it could off been even larger 2 weeks ago
They seemed very calm and willing to wait and see so fx .
I just don't want it to affect baby. That's my worry

I had a 8.5cm x 10cm simple cyst on my second pregnancy.

It was half the size on my first pregnancy but whilst it was picked up on my anomaly scan I switched trusts and nobody mentioned it again.

I had additional scans when they realised how big it had gotten - they almost tanked my home birth ideas but thankfully it moved behind my uterus and they couldn’t pick it up. They said it had been absorbed and sign off my HB. I was fairly certain it hadn’t because it had been there for 5 years already so unlikely to just disappear.

Reader, I was correct. Cyril the Cyst was removed laparoscopically when DC2 was 10 months. Fairly certain he’s back though...wanker.

There was talking of draining it if it got any bigger but clearly it hid and bought a stay of execution!

ballsdeep · 24/11/2020 21:54

I had a cyst that grew in pregnancy. I gave birth to it.

toptreeroots1 · 24/11/2020 21:57

More than likely I can come back at 18 weeks and say it's shrunk 😁🤞🤞

It's just my anxiety making it into a bigger problem I think

I’ve just discovered I have a cyst and I am so worried. I am waiting to hear back from the hospital so feel in limbo. I’m only 8 and a half weeks gone and it’s a huge cyst, 15cm! They were shocked.
I’m finding the stories in this thread slightly reassuring but still so worried as I know I’ll have to wait for ages until they can do anything. I’m not in pain but it is uncomfortable. I have quite a physical job so terrified it will twist or rupture.
Has anyone had one so large during pregnancy?

ScottishStardust · 20/02/2021 23:26

Him@Maisieapple - mine wasn't as big around 8.5cm, however it's now disappeared during pregnancy. Sometimes a cyst develops to support baby in the early days and then just disappears. Plus side, I've had brilliant care, extra scans and appointments and have felt very looked after!
