Nuchal translucency scan - high end

Hi everyone

I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice. I have got myself into a right pickle over the weekend. I had my dating scan on Friday and the nuchal translucency is 2.90mm. The sonographer didn't seem worried and said that 3.5 is usually the marker for concern. She was positive about the scan and I had my bloods done right after as part of the combined screening test.

However, stupidly when I got home I started playing Doctor Google, and actually learnt that 2.90mm is on the high side and above the average. After reading lots of reports and journals, I have ended up in a bit of a mess. I'm also 40 and know puts me at higher risk too. I had a miscarriage earlier this year and it broke my heart, so I'm naturally sensitive to anything that could go wrong.

I did call the hospital today to explain my anxiety and fear and the head of the screening department, said the measurement was a bit high but to wait for the blood test results that should be through today or tomorrow. I called her at the end of today just to check to see if any results had come in and got my name mixed up with a similar name and said "it's come back low risk...actually" - it's just the way she said it like she was shocked. And then she read out my personal information and it was obviously not meant for me. So in the end, my results hadn't come back yet, and she was obviously shocked to see the results were low risk.

I have spent the whole evening crying just thinking the worst, and good knows what the anxiety and stress is doing to the baby. I'm really hoping someone has been in a similar situation to me. I know I'm jumping head without the blood results but from everything I've read, I just can't help but think the odds are against me especially with my age. It's helped just to write everything down. so thank you xxx

I hope you get the results really soon and they are reassuring.

When I had my last dating scan the doctor doing it said that the NT was measured around 13 times during the scan. It’s the highest measurement that is used for the calculation, so even if there were a dozen measurements at 1.2mm and one at 2.9mm then the 2.9mm is the one that will be used. Also, certain positions can make the NT look bigger than others.

As it’s the combined test, your age alone will really increase your risk factor. Your PAPP-A and HCG do not look a concern to me. I know it’s stressful, but I’d try to take some positivity from your results. Any markers for DS (or anything else) would be written on your scan write up. Looking for the nasal bone is standard for the sonographer (although possibly not until the 20 week scan) but if it is confirmed that it’s missing, that will be on your notes.

The images were a little small, but I did see the nasal bone! Have you had your NIPT results yet?

Grace2021 · 01/12/2020 21:47

@ThisMammaCat thank you. I never saw your message at first. As I didn’t go to the second page. Thank you so much. I haven’t got my results yet. I am expecting the results tomorrow. I’m very scared and as a natural worry I haven’t coped very well at all. Thanks for your message xx

Hi all - I just got my results. And all is o.k. I have come back at low risk for all 3 chromosomes....One in 306,900 (0.0003%)...I just can't believe it and it hasn't sunk in yet! I did ask the midwife if I should have further checks because of the NT (2.90) and heart defects but she said no everything is absolutely fine...but I still do wonder! Honestly, I'm so happy and all those prayers have been answered. Thank you so much for everyone's support, you have all been great and given me comfort in some very dark hours. Thank you xxxxx
