I had my scan today I believe I'm 5weeks and 3 days from last period .. last week they scanned me as I had a few pains and had previous MC and the only seen a thickening lining.

A week later today they can see a sac yolk and a Fetus but not a heartbeat as yet I was wondering if this is normal as it's sending my anxiety through the roof and would really appreciate any stories to this xxx

I hope you feel able to discuss your worries about this with the people scanning you. They will be able to reassure you, and explain anything you are not sure about. Did they explain that a lack of heartbeat so early may not be a bad sign?

I had some early scans due to heavy bleeding and pain. I have had a previous miscarriage as well, so I understand your anxiety. It's very normal not to see a heartbeat so early in pregnancy, and I'm guessing that's part of the reason they have booked you in for another scan. The worry is so intense, but I really hope you will get reassuring news on Monday.

@WingingIt2021 I will let you know how I get on tomorrow I'm getting such bad sickness on a night not being sick just yet but it's bad hopefully that's a good sign x

@tofuschnitzel they didn't really say they kept saying we need to see if it will be a growing pregnancy or not so made me abit more paranoid if I'm honest ☹️ xx

Hopefully that was a really clumsy way of them indicating that it is most likely too early in your pregnancy for them to see a heartbeat.

I've just googled for more information on a fetal heartbeat and this is from parenting.firstcry.com/articles/no-heartbeat-at-6-weeks-faqs/

"It is very common to not hear a heartbeat at a 6-week ultrasound scan. In some cases, moms-to-be don’t hear their baby’s heartbeat until they’re 7 weeks pregnant.

Not hearing a foetal heartbeat at 6 weeks is normal and there’s no reason for worry. The gestational age of your pregnancy may also be inaccurate. Due to an irregular ovulation pattern or inaccurate estimate of your last menstrual cycle, you may not really be 6 weeks pregnant. This could also be the reason for not hearing a heartbeat."

I know it is impossible not to worry. I hope you get good news tomorrow x

WingingIt2021 · 30/11/2020 13:34

@mollieangel123 that is perfect! Hopefully you can relax a bit now. I'm 6+5 today so we are very very close ☺ I'll definitely update you. I'm really torn, the spotting last week made me think it was all over. But the nausea has been pretty bad all weekend so that gives me hope. I'm really crampy today though which I hate and freaks me out. Honestly I'm 50/50 on how it could go xx

mollieangel123 · 30/11/2020 13:44

@WingingIt2021 aww wow we are really close! Awww no way that would really scare me too! But that's normal too may even be twins 👀😂 try and think positive and il be thinking of you! The nausea is a good sign though! Mine hits me on a night so bad at the moment I got everything crossed for you xxxx

@mollieangel123 definitely not twins thank god, I had an early scan and only one bean. Thanks very much, I'll let you know how it goes xx

Mimba1 · 30/11/2020 14:14

Had an external NHS scan at 7+2 (previous losses, on progesterone), measured 6+4 with HB. At 12+2 measured 12+1 so had caught up. Now 22wks and all looking good.

Poppystars · 30/11/2020 14:16

8 weeks.
My IVF consultant and my NHS said no point scanning before then unless significant pain and chance of ectopic.
Means not stressed waiting as there will be one by 8 weeks.

tofuschnitzel · 30/11/2020 15:44

@physicskate

It's only 50/50 chance of seeing a heartbeat at 6 weeks or so. Stop getting so many early scans. They aren't helping your anxiety. Now that you know it isn't ectopic, not anything can be done either way things go.
You do realise that early scans are available through the NHS? Each hospital has an Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit for this, the clue is in the name. If it is medically necessary, you will be offered scans and other assessments during early pregnancy. Don't admonish women for following the advice of medical professionals and having early scans.

OP that is excellent news, I am so pleased for you!

MnM156 · 30/11/2020 15:45

6 weeks and 3 days

4Minions2CallMyOwn · 30/11/2020 15:57

That’s great @mollieangel123, so happy for you! Smile

physicskate · 30/11/2020 16:39

@tofuschnitzel is people are getting scans at 4 ish weeks pregnant and then freaking out (kind of rightfully) about not seeing heartbeats, I'd suggest it was highly medically irresponsible to repeat scan only a short time later (as in the op's case). At the very least things weren't explained properly.

And the op did not say they were Epu scans in the original post. I see it all the time on here: people getting repeated scans super early and it only feeds anxiety, instead of providing any sort of reassurance.

I did say to stop getting so many scans as they were feeding her anxiety, which in itself if medically irresponsible of whoever was providing threes scans.

The vast majority of early scans are to prove or disprove a uterine pregnancy. Once that's been proven, if it's too early for a heartbeat, it really isn't medically necessary to get multiple scans that only prove a uterine pregnancy.

Sometimes an individual needs to weigh up for themselves whether so many early scans are helpful to their mental health. It's a bit like women who test repeatedly for 'line progression' but find it doesn't help smooth any of their anxiety either.

You have the right to refuse any test.

A few pains and one previous mc is highly unlikely to require three scans before 7 weeks as medically necessary. I speak from experience.

Mishmased · 30/11/2020 17:43

That's a lovely update, congratulations!

JLM1008 · 30/11/2020 18:22

I was 6+4 with this pregnancy (3rd) I only had an early scan due to low left sided pain. Hopefully it’s just too early x

mollieangel123 · 01/12/2020 11:28

@WingingIt2021 how did your scan go? Thinking of you and thankyou so much @4Minions2CallMyOwn xxx

WingingIt2021 · 01/12/2020 15:20

Hi @mollieangel123
Thanks so much for checking in! Little bean was there with a heartbeat flashing away on screen. The negative is bean is measuring about a week behind and they did see a small bleed as well, which explains the spotting. So basically we need bean to catch up and the bleed to pass / go away before I can properly relax. I have a midwife apt on Thursday so going to speak to them and hopefully I can be monitored to make sure things are developing. If not I have a private scan in 3 weeks so hopefully that will be cleaer 🙂 i am not overally excited at the prospect of more bleeding but hopefully if it does pass it won't be a lot!
