Hi, my gums keep bleeding and there is a constant taste of metal in my mouth!!

When I brush my teeth it looks like i have been punched in the mouth when I spit into the sink

I have been to my dentist and he said that my gums are bleeding but he couldn't prescribe me mouthwash because I am pregnant! The dentist say my teeth and gums are healthy and that this is normal in pregnancy?

I've had to stop eating certain hard foods because my gums just bleed!!

Does anyone know of any remedies?!!

Thanks!

Can't help, had metal mouth with ds, it's very normal and certain food etc. can taste weird - can't help with the bleeding gums though but I have heard of that before. I'd say your dentist knows best

I don't have it myself, but it is fairly common. In pregnancy it's normal for your gums to recede slightly (temporarily) -- if you are unfortunate enough to have sensitive gums this may well cause bleeding which in turn will cause a metallic taste (although a metallic tast by itself is also a commpn very early symptom of pregnancy). You've done the right thing getting checked by the dentist to rule out anything else, though.

How pregnant are you?

I'm 18 weeks now and this 'taste' has just come from nowhere!!! When i brush my teeth I do it softly and they still bleed!

I keep drinking lots of water and orange juice but as you've guessed i'm almost married to the toilet! lol!!

I sympathise on the "taste" I have it too. I think it may have something to do with increased blood flow (also i have to take iron tablets)
My gums also bleed, but less so the better the food I eat ie no junk! One thing about this pg is that its stopped me eating anything with artificial additives or sweeteners (or onions or garlic) bc it makes the taste in my mouth unbearable [sick]

Hiya

I had the metal taste with my first baby. It was the first "sign" I had of the PGcy - I remember thinking "thats wierd, why can I taste metal?" then doing the test - so it must have been just after my period was due

It will go away BTW

can be iron deficiency, so get your levels checked

SqueeelyMeeely2 · 19/10/2007 22:35

i had this in early weeks, like u sucking pennies....

I developed a craving for sherbet lemons and 'proper' lemonade which managed to mask the odd taste.

meandmy · 20/10/2007 17:01

gum diesease is more common during pgy so get advise from your gp, i sucked pear drops to hide the taste or chewed soft mints hth

My mouth tastes of arse. No matter what I eat. It's disgusting all day long. Even water tastes gross at the moment and I normally love it!!

MerlinsBeard · 20/10/2007 18:09

you could chew gum. i get that taste off and on (am also 18 weeks)

i found washing my mouth with really salty water helped to get rid of the bad taste in my mouth that you get with bleeding gums, and reduced the amount they bled.
HTH
