Cleft lip on scan?!?

MumToBe96 · 19/11/2020 20:36

Hi everyone,

I seem to be worrying so much in my pregnancy! Every little thing I’m googling or reading threads which probably isn’t helping. On my scan photo it looks as thought there is a gap between the mouth like she is grinning like a Cheshire Cat? Just wondering if this is morning

If there was a cleft lip visible on the scan the person doing the scan would have seen and mentioned it.

iano · 19/11/2020 21:54

As pp said the sonographers job is to check for this sort of thing.
Have you told the MW about your anxieties. They might be able to help you. Pregnancy is stressful and with the hormones sometimes anxiety gets worse.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 20/11/2020 15:01

Have you had the anomaly scan (20 wks)? That's one of the things they check for.
I've actually done some work related to cleft palates, and tbh there are degrees of severity (eg cleft palate is worse that cleft lip), but it's very treatable nowadays with surgery and possibly speech therapy. You will almost certainly have met people who've had one repaired as a newborn as you can't tell.

doctorhamster · 20/11/2020 15:24

If your baby had a cleft lip you would have been told after the scan. Speak to the GP about your anxiety Flowers

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 20/11/2020 15:29

Ah wait OP are you talking about the 12 week scan or 20?
@doctorhamster and I have interpreted your post differently I think!

Dowermouse · 20/11/2020 15:29

As above, if it was that obvious, the sonographer would have referred you on.
I was born with a cleft lip and it's barely noticeable, my face is slightly asymmetrical, but I have a bigger scar from walking into a lamppost! That said, I'm glad my own dc didn't inherit it and that we didn't need to be separated for the plastic surgery.

MumToBe96 · 20/11/2020 15:34

I have my 20 week scan in 2 and half week, for some reason it doesn’t let me post photos on here for you all to see. After speaking to my midwife she said my worrying is normal

Was it a NHS 20 week scan? If so, I think you can be confident if there was an issue they would have told you.

If it was a private scan then there were some horror stories about those yesterday www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-54527595 but one would think those amount to a minority of women seen by private clinics.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 20/11/2020 15:38

It’s one of the things they will check for at 20 week scan, so you will know for certain then.

Embracelife · 20/11/2020 15:42

Wait for 20 week nhs scan

Embracelife · 20/11/2020 15:43

Cleft can be easily treated with surgery .

PFin · 23/11/2020 03:32

How far along are you and what scan was it? At your 20 week scan this is something they look for. Scans can be so patchy to me and really only professonals know what they are looking at so its hard but try not to worry your probably diagnosing things that arnt even there.

However if your right this is minor compared to other things that can go wrong. No one wants anything to be wrong with there baby but a cleft lip is not major. There are different severity of cleft lips but often they come with a cleft palette also. I have a cleft lip which was first opperated on 29 years ago when i was a few months old. It was not the best surgery my dad was never happy with the outcome and he took me to a specialist years later. I had another op around 10 which turned out better and another when i was around 16. And now i have a scar on my upper lip running upto my nose and my nose is not exactly semetrical but it hasnt really effectes my life that badly.

MumToBe96 · 23/11/2020 07:13

Hi all, it’s from my 16 week scan I paid privately as my partner hasn’t been allowed because of coronavirus! My 20 week scan is in 2 and half weeks. It’s now finally let me attach a photograph.

Excellent treatment of clefts these days, even if it was.

CatbearAmo · 23/11/2020 07:31

Sometimes you can get really terrible looking photos done because the button was pressed just at the wrong time. I had a scan where it looked like DD was just a skeleton but it was just the bad light/timing. It's likely that isn't what her real mouth and face look like at all. If you compare a baby's standard vs. 3D scan they look totally different. Doctors know what to look for on normal scans and would have hopefully flagged anything wrong

40weekswithno2 · 23/11/2020 07:55

If there was a visible cleft then the sonographer would have mentioned it

Arrowcat · 23/11/2020 08:48

Sweetheart that's not a cleft lip - it's normal development of the palatal shelves and nasolabial fold.
These don't even fuse in the middle till 16 weeks so don't worry.
Cleft lip is easy to spot and they'll check at 20 weeks. And even if there is a cleft lip (very very small chance) it is easy to fix long term. Yes it takes a while to get used to it but by the time child is 2 you would never know. XXX

Bumble84 · 23/11/2020 09:02

Agree with @Arrowcat that does not look like a cleft to me.

boymum4 · 23/11/2020 09:16

I worried about so much with my scans for my son, at one point I thought he had no nose! (Sounds ridiculous) then I worried about his short femurs and thought he might have dwarfism.

Trust me it's so normal to worry, the chances are your lo will be absolutely fine 😊

My son is 4 months old and nothing wrong at all. Good luck 💖

MumToBe96 · 23/11/2020 09:41

Thank you ladies! I feel a little more at ease now to know I’m not the only one worrying💖

Hi mumtobe96
Try not to worry. I was born with a cleft lip and 40 years old now. It's no biggie. I don't have many photos younger than 3 months before surgery as it wasn't the done thing in the day. Trust me there are way worse things but do understand your anxiety. Pm me if you want any further info

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 23/11/2020 11:30

remember that the photo is a slice through the middle of the baby as well OP - it's a very strange angle if you're not used to it! I've spent a lot of time looking at MRI scans of people's heads and it takes a while to get used to!

CormoranStrike · 03/01/2021 09:33

Hiya, as a parent of two children with clefts that does NOT look like a cleft lip to me (non medical professional though).

Hope you got reassurance from your healthcare workers.

Bluntness100 · 03/01/2021 09:35

Op, have you spoken to your doctor about your anxiety? I think it might be worth doing so. 💐

MumToBe96 · 03/01/2021 10:11

All okay on 20 week scan and Iv had lots of chats over my anxiety! Seem to be relaxing a little more 💖
