7wks gestation, empty sac

Hey everyone, I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through the same as what we are?

My last period was 29th september and this was my third period since coming off the coil. We found out I was pregnant on the 29th Oct. I had an early scan on Saturday 7th (5wks+4 since last period) as I had pain in my shoulder and had gone through an ectopic before. On this scan they saw nothing concerning but no sac, yolk or baby either, which I understand may have been too early anyway. They did my bloods which came back at 154 and then repeated them 48 hours later and they went up to 283. They then scanned me again yesterday (7wks since last period) but only saw an empty sac. Surely they should have seen the full works by now? I'm now not being scanned again for 17 days, but this wait seems impossible and I cant stop googling things!!

The doctors are saying that I potentially have ovulated late which may mean that I'm less ahead than what the dates suggest. They also said they can take off two weeks but I dont get why, is it to do with late ovulation and implantation time?

Any insight, help and advice would be lovely, thank you xx

7 weeks since last period means that if you ovulated at the average time of 14 days after LMP (based on an average 28 day cycle) then you would've only conceived 5 weeks ago. If you ovulated later than day 14 then you could only be 4ish weeks pregnant. It really isn't unusual to not see anything on a scan at that many weeks gestation, and I don't say this to keep your hopes up but there's just as much chance everything is fine and the baby just hasn't developed enough to be picked up on a scan yet.

Sadly this is one of those horrible situations where the only thing that'll give you an answer, is time. Wishing you lots of luck

Ah ok, this does make sense. I was under the impression that when you have a scan they count weeks from the first day of your last period and they would expect to see everything by week 7.

I find it all very confusing and time is definitely the only way to find out but god it's hard! :(

Hi OP,

If your first positive pregnancy test was on 29th oct, and nothing was seen on Saturday beside an empty sac 16 days later , it does seem a bit slow to progress.
I had a similar experience and it wasn't good news for me.
But i have also read posts where it was slow at the start but eventually caught up and was a healthy pregnancy.
The only way to know it to wait unfortunately.
You could repeat a scan in a week privately though if the wait is too much.
Fingers crossed 🤞

My last period started on 26th Sept, I tested on 16th Oct and got a negative. Tested on 25th Oct and got a positive, I had a scan almost two weeks ago thinking I was 6 weeks but all that could be seen was an empty sac. I’ve had a long two week wait and we go for our rescan this Sunday! I’m hoping I ovulated later than I thought and I’m maybe a week or two behind also xx

Mother2princess · 18/11/2020 21:41

It could be fine ive been there it wasn't good news

Jadephillips521 · 18/11/2020 22:15

Sunnysideup, yea it does seem very slow. I know I shouldn't compare but my early pregnancy scan with my previous baby showed everything at 6 weeks from missed period. it's so hard to predict anything, but kinda comforting others have gone through the same thing!

TTCBaby, our dates are so similar! How did you get through the two weeks? It just seems so far away, one minute I'm positive then I'm so negative about it all and expecting the worst. I really hope Sunday goes well for you xx

@Jadephillips521 It’s been a long two weeks, it’s our first baby too so absolutely no idea what’s normal! Hoping we both get good news! When is your rescan? Sunday can’t come quick enough! xx

PurpleMustang · 18/11/2020 23:15

The dates are all confusing because nobody can be sure as to what point the baby was actually conceived. So they use your last period say as a starting point ie couldn't have been earlier than this. As then also it can take days for sperm to meet egg and then usually 'adjust/decide' the due date from the 12 weeks scan when they can measure the baby. Even people that have IVF and obviously know the date of conception are told to wait 2 weeks before testing. It is just a waiting game unfortunately. Good luck

Jadephillips521 · 19/11/2020 07:25

@TTCBaby1 I understand, although it doesnt sound like there much that is 'normal' with early pregnancy right now! I keep comparing these scan dates/outcomes with my previous pregnancy which was a breeze, but every pregnancy is so different so it's pointless. My rescan isnt until Friday 4th, 15 days away still! Sometimes I feel like if I didnt go for this early scan we would be non the wiser and everything would be fine by the 12 weeks and all this worry would be for nothing, I hope!

@PurpleMustang thank you, I'm really hoping with a few days late ovulation and a few days meeting sperm and implanting time it has put me back a week or 2. This would means what they saw in scan would make a bit more sense... I think 😔

I feel like I need a nurse to follow me around 24/7 to retell me through everything as soon as I feel negative!

If you have 15 days, you are going to need to breathe and find something to take your mind off this. With roughly 1 in 4 pregnancies ending in miscarriage and early tests and scans I think it does nothing for the health and anxiety of the mums to be. Think they had the right idea years ago when you just didn't know till 12 weeks

Jadephillips521 · 24/11/2020 19:35

@PurpleMustang I completely agree, an early scan has done more harm than good so far. I have 10 days left to wait, it seems to be going a little faster the more time that goes on

Did you get your re-scan @Jadephillips521?

Jadephillips521 · 05/12/2020 10:24

@DeborahAlisonphillipa it went great, a little bean with a heartbeat measuring at about 8 weeks! Thank you for asking 🥰

That’s amazing, what a stress you’ve had. Congratulations.
