I found out I was pregnant at 4 weeks last Friday. Took 8 Pregnacy test all different brands all positive. Had some brown spotting on Wednesday called epu they reassured me that it’s normal but it continued just when I wiped but I continued testing and still getting positive test on Friday got another positive cb digital. On Sunday I went to a&e just to get checked out and they gave me a pregnancy test which was negative and said it’s very unlikely I’m still pregnant. I have a scan tomorrow but has anyone ever experienced this.

Honestly, you shouldn't have gone to a and e. It's only heightened your concerns and anxiety. Their tests are not at all sensitive. A small amount of spotting in early pregnancy is neither an accident nor an emergency.

You'll likely be too early to see anything on a scan either, which again will make your anxiety worse.

In the absence of bleeding at least as heavy as your period probably coupled with heavy cramps, it's likely that things are just fine. One sided excruciating pain (with or without bleeding) would also be a worry.

Even if it were a miscarriage, there is nothing that can be done. Sadly, they are all too common and the vast majority (especially when so early) require no medical intervention at all.

The earliest something is likely to be seen on a scan is 5-6 weeks, and even then, likely only transvaginally. You'd be highly unlikely to see anything like a heartbeat until AT LEAST 6 weeks, and in many cases, more like 7.

Early pregnancy is a worrying time for everyone, I get that. But it sounds like you're trying to medicalise something where there are no real indications that something is wrong. Normally, I'd be suggesting a wait and watch approach in situations like this...

so sorry to hear you are going through this rn, such a nerve wracking time. Have u took any more home tests today?

PurBal · 16/11/2020 21:07

So today you're around 5+3?

I had spotting and then a scan at 5+5 based on LMP and the scan was inconclusive, I have to go back at 7+5. (6+3 today).

Thoughts are with you.

Hi, I had a similar situation but went to the Early Pregnancy Unit at my local hospital and the test came back negative (although I could actually see a faint line on it but the GP said it was negative...!) so they told me it was a MC and sent me home without scanning me or doing anything else. I continued to bleed (it had been over 3 weeks already at that point- I was having heavier bleeding though just like a period) and I continued to test positive at home, after a couple more weeks I went to another EPU at a different hospital and they were lovely they tested my blood and then scanned me as they were worried about retained tissue. It confirmed that I had had a miscarriage, but they handled it in a much nicer way than the first EPU who basically just sent me on my way! The second EPU also had a midwife talk through everything with me after each time I went in (had to keep having bloods done to check my levels were coming down as I ended up bleeding for around 7 weeks). When I first went to the second EPU I also took my pregnancy tests from home to show them as I was worried they wouldn't believe me. Hopefully the scan will clear things up for you. Good luck OP xx

Thank you all so much for your comments. I had my scan today but they said they couldn’t see anything. The spotting has stopped they done another pregnancy test and it was positive. They have taken my bloods and if the hormone level is over 25 I have to go back in 48 hours. The epu the nurse was lovely but the lady who gave me the scan told me twice that I shouldn’t of even had an appointment and was trying to work out who gave me it. I’ve left feeling more confused than anything.

Sorry to hear you've had such a terrible time, especially with those scan comments, really horrible and insensitive. Take deep breaths and try to relax as best you can Xxx

The midwife just called there and my levels are 189 so I have to go back on Thursday for more bloods.

Hi Lauren,

I know your post is old but do you mind me asking what happened? I’m in the exact same situation as you. Waiting for a scan on Tuesday

Thank you
