This will be my first baby so I don’t have a clue what’s safe and what’s not so have been Googling everything. I read that nail polish is u safe because of the chemicals however I know there are some pro’s on here that can help me... is this really true as it wasn’t on the nhs website and if it is are there any “safe” nail polishes I can use. I paint my nails all the time and really miss it (8+4)

It's absolutely fine.

Rule of thumb is if it's not on the NHS website then it's ok. Start taking in all the food rules as there are loads of things people will tell you to avoid that are actually fine!

It's fine. However you should apply it in a well ventilated area as the biggest issue is the fumes

Tbh take advantage of painting them now. When the baby is born you should avoid it. You end up putting your finger in their mouth especially once they start teething.

This is news to me and I'm on my second pregnancy and painted my nails throughout. Trust me you'll be fine Smile

Some evidence suggests that the phthalates in many nail varnishes can decrease egg quality. Moot point when already pregnant, a bit.

I havent worn nail varnish for this reason since I read 'it starts with the egg' some years ago. Some evidence suggests it can bioaccumulate and affect the fertility of offspring. A bit like bpa found in some plastics.

For the vast majority of people, it likely makes less than zero difference, but is something the crazy infertiles (like I once was) would pay attention to.

Thanks everyone for your responses, I might see out the first trimester before painting them. I don’t realise it could effect fertility that’s interesting.

Some studies... not definitive. Really it's for those clutching at straws, like I once was.

I was also nervy as like @physicskate I read the same book and did ivf. Just bought some nailberry polish today now I'm nearly 20 weeks, its "12 free" so missing 12 of the chemicals that some regard as more dodgy. I think you can get "10 free" and "5 free" too. Seemed a sensible compromise to use that and be out the first trimester if you have any fears

Thanks parkandride, I’ll have a google and see what I can find. Thank you

I work day in, day out with nail polish. I’m now 39 weeks pregnant in my second pregnancy. You’ll be fine Smile
