Blood clot during pregnancy, c section?

I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism on Wednesday, both lungs effected and some fairly big clots. I’d wanted a c section this time after problems with my daughters birth and I’m not sure if they will let me now with the blood thinners. Has anyone had a c section while on blood thinners? I’m only 14 weeks and they have said I’ll be on them until after I give birth so I don’t know if this means surgery is totally out the window now.

I was on blood thinners with DD for whole pregnancy and will also start them this pregnancy at 28 weeks - I had c section fine with DD and will again this time. You just have to take your last injection about 24-36 hours before surgery

It could be argued it might be better as you can plan a date and therefore plan a date to stop taking the injection. Unlike a spontaneous vaginal birth which will still have a risk of haemorrhage.

I’m on Clexnex ( I think that’s the name ) I inject in my thigh every day and will be doing this until 6 weeks after birth.
I have been on this since 26 weeks . I’m still going ahead with my planned C Section .

I had PEs in my last pregnancy and PP is right, they will tell you to stop the Clexane 24-36 hours pre-surgery.

Oh and then you'll restart the blood thinners after baby is born.

Yes I was told I wouldn't be allowed to go into spontaneous labour as much as they could ensure that - I would have been induced a few days earlier than due date but I ended up with a planned c section due to breach baby anyway

My mum had a dvt when she was pregnant with me and was allowed to go 3 weeks over due as they didn’t want to operate so I was a bit worried but things must have changed (it was 29 years ago!) but her labour went horribly and she nearly bled out so I wasn’t keen on that idea. I have another question for those who’ve done this were you awake for the c section or put out? The leaflet in the blood thinners says I can’t have an epidural but I don’t know if that changes if they are stopped for the 24 hours? I really would like to be awake!

Op do you have follow up with your obstetric team soon? Agree with others you’ll be able to havea CS if that’s what you want, but your exact plan will be adjusted for you specifically. Not everyone is on the same dose of clexane - depending on the situation you may be having having either 3 or 6 months of “treatment dose” and then down to a lower preventative dose. Timing of stopping before delivery depends on your dose and how bad your c lots are/were, also I imagine you’re having testing for thrombophilias - that can affect what the plan is as well. In terms of anaesthesiaonly your medical team can advise - if you’re on the prevention dose and it’s been stopped for at least 12 hrs then usually you can be awake for CS for example. Sorry you’ve had this happen - but hopefully you find you get a clear plan over time.

I have an appointment with the thrombosis team on Wednesday but I don’t know when I’m seeing obstetrics yet, they have said I’ll be under a consultant with them which I assume is standard. Thrombosis have only said that I’ll be on the blood thinners until after I give birth which sent me in to a bit of a tail spin! Hopefully some things can be explained a little better soon. Because I’m only 15 weeks today I think it’s just that there’s a long way to go.
I’m really hoping they will test for things like thrombophilia as my uncle (mums brother) died of a pulmonary embolism two years ago and he’d had some clots in his leg as well so that’s now three of us to have them. They’re dad also died of a stroke in his early 60s.

Thrombosis team will be helpful too. This type of thing is pretty common in terms of planning around delivery - so it’ll all be ok! Definitely needs testing w that family history, sorry to hear about your uncle.
