Ibuprofen?

I’m 16 weeks today, just had a tooth taken out. Dentist mentioned that ibuprofen would be ideal for pain but I understand you aren’t supposed to take it when pregnant?

Would I be ok taking it or not? I’m in a lot of pain.

You aren’t supposed to no.
But I caved and took it once as a one off for tooth pain at twenty something weeks and all was fine.
I also found very icy water to swill my mouth with helpful.
You could try codeine which is safe used short term in pregnancy if paracetamol is doing nothing.

I've just had a dental abcess then root canal treatment and was told I can't take anything but paracetamol, I can't say it did much good I'm afraid. I'm 12 weeks.
Hope it gets better soon!

The advice is NOT to take ibuprofen. Did the dentist know you were pregnant?

Queenbee95 · 13/11/2020 16:45

@Janek yes she does, she said to maybe ask advice from gp first but having no luck getting through on the phone

Would say no.
I had awful tooth pain and it sucked but every health professional said I was not to take ibuprofen so I didn't.

Yes, I think she's made it sound like there might be some leeway (because things aren't tested on pregnant women so we don't know it's safe), but I am fairly sure (although not a medic) that ibuprofen is forbidden for good reason. So sorry for your pain, tooth pain is awful. :-(

I’ve just taken paracetamol, although I know it won’t do much 😰 I’m sure I’ll manage though

My midwife said I could take Cocodamol every now and then if I was desperate as I was getting horrendous headaches in first trimester. Really helped even just to know I had a "last resort" option.
Had to buy over the counter but didn't tell them I was pregnant (they didn't ask) but I wasn't showing or anything then. Apparently pharmacists won't give them to pregnant women so bear that in mind if you do try and get some.....or send someone else to get them.

Hope you feel better soon!

I think the reason you’re not supposed to take ibuprofen is it can cause early closure of the patent ductus arteriosus which is part of the fetal heart. I’m pretty relaxed during pregnancy but I absolutely wouldn’t take ibuprofen. As a previous poster said codeine is ok - even the stronger stuff if you can get someone to prescribe it.

Queenbee95 · 13/11/2020 20:08

@rockyIV I took 2 co-codamol around 5 and it’s definitely helped. I’d usually take co-codamol rather than paracetamol, I just feel paracetamol does nothing for me. But I’ve been really cautious about taking it just in case, I try not to take any meds during pregnancy unless medically advised
