Nitrofurantoin for UTI

I am 8 weeks pregnant and been put on a weeks course of nitrofurantoin for a UTI. The sample has been sent off to be cultured and check that the antibiotics are the right one for my infection. This is the first time I have had to have antibiotics for a UTI so I have no idea what to expect from these tablets, however I feel really tired on these tablets. Being 8 weeks pregnant I already felt tired but these seems to have added another layer to it 🤦
Has anyone else found that nitrofurantoin makes them really tired?
On the plus side, two tablets in and they seem to be working.

I'm on the same, although I have mega low b12 and anaemia so I'm knackered anyway!
Did it turn your pee bright yellow? After the first tablet, mine looked as bright as a highlighter! 😂

Hi, I'm 5+6 and have just finished a course of Nitro. I have recurrent UTIs and tbh I don't feel this latest one has fully gone so I now need to drop off another sample. I feel like I'm just in an endless cycle of UTI misery and I'm probably getting resistant to Nitro 😭

Anyway, I've had Nitro many times and I don't find it makes me tired, I think it's probably the pregnancy itself making you tired. The bright yellow/orange pee is definitely a thing though!

@Waitingforbabypage yes it did. I was pretty florescent 😂 I am surprised that the doctors don't warn you about that.
I generally get low vitamin d during winter so I am constantly a level of tiredness but I kind of got use to functioning at that level 😂 this is just another level on top. I am having my booking in appointment next week so interested to see what my blood test comes back with

@Luckyelephant1 fingers crossed for you that you get it cleared up soon. My sister seems to get UTIs a lot and they generally go to her kidneys so I am thankful that any previous UTIs have cleared up on their own.
It is probably just coincidence. Really could do with a nap already 🤣

@Trying4one haha! I'm so glad it's not just me! It freaked me right out!
I don't actually feel like I have a uti, it was my sample from my booking in that flagged it up. I often get kidney infections so maybe it's that?

I’ve had loads of UTIs and don’t take nitro anymore as my bugs tend to be resistant - it’s never made me tired. Being 8 wks pregnant makes me exhausted though!

Luckyelephant1 · 14/11/2020 11:01

Hi @Moo678 what are you prescribed now instead of Nitro? Curious as I'm fairly sure I'm resistant too. Think I will need another round of antibiotics which is concerning as that will be 2 rounds of antibiotics in just 6 weeks of pregnancy.

The antibiotics are safe, don’t be worrying. I had three sets of antibiotics within less than three weeks for three different infections. One being a uti. I was given Keflex for that and it did the job.
I don’t know about side effects of Nitro, but one of my main symptoms of a uti is exhaustion so your tiredness might be coming from that rather than the antibiotic itself.
