Hello had anybody been prescribed the chloramphenicol eye drops for conjunctivitis whilst pregnant and had any problems with it? I'm 23 weeks just been given it I'm sure it's safe but just wondered if anybody has used Smile

Hey I know this is old but hoping you’ll see... did you use them and all was fine? I’m in the same position 25 weeks!

Don’t! Chloramphenicol is contraindicated in pregnant women- you need fuscidic acid xx

Too late 🤦🏼‍♀️ I used them 3 times then threw them away as I got scared and it seemed to clear most up now maintaining with bathing them. I spoke to a pharmacist he said it’s okay they just need a doctor to prescribe ‘just in case’ who knows, fingers crossed all is okay. Baby is moving around lots and seems happy

Also nhs website says it’s fine. It’s so confusing!

Don’t worry they are only not recommended on the basis that there’s not enough evidence to say they are definitely safe but the likelihood is actually they are. I am an optometrist and I used chloramphenicol in my first pregnancy myself before doing a prescribing course and realising not recommended- DC is just fine. But I check the BNF for everything now Wink

Oh thank you so much that’s definitely made me feel better. Thank you!
