I'm bumping you Dawn, I'm on my first pregnancy so can't help but hopefully a bump up will get an answer from someone who does! x

With my first I was 3/5 engaged for about 2 months. DD1 arrived a measly 2 days early.

With DS1 there was no engagement until the week before onset of labour. He was 10 days late.

I'm afraid I have no recollection of what happened with my 3rd. Too much else to do by then.

When are you due?

Dawn2820 · 16/10/2007 20:43

my first due date was the 25th oct and my scan said 3rd nov

so it could be any of them

unfortunatly it isnt engaged. engaged is the full 5/5. good news is baby cant turn breech now i dont think. im 41 weeks pregnant my baby is 4/5 and has been 4 ages. my cervix is tight shut and it dont look like labour is going2 start on its own im being induced in 3 days and its frustrating. but i was told by a midwife it makes no real difference whether babys engaged or not. labour can start before babys head engages

i think its that way round 5/5 is engaged 1/5 is still high up. is that right?

TheDuchessOfCorpseBride · 16/10/2007 20:52

It all sounds fine Dawn - your baby is getting ready but it doesn't mean the birth is imminent (which is what I thought with my first being wedged down like that ).

And with 2 possible due dates the baby can really keep you guessing!

Have a great birth!

TheDuchessOfCorpseBride · 16/10/2007 20:52

number1 - I think that's right too!

lomondgal · 16/10/2007 20:56

It means the head is three fifths engaged but not fully engaged. Some people don't get fully engaged until labour.

spanna07 · 16/10/2007 22:56

I was 3/5 engaged at 35wks with DD1 but she came at 40+6 and was OP (back to back) so not sure how she managed that twist around! Good Luck.

Hello

Basically, you can 'fit' 5 fingers on a baby's head. If you're 3/5 engaged, the mw can only feel 2 fingers-worth of head above your pubic bone. And yes, you can go into labour without being engaged at all, though I think this is more likely with second babies.

I am now 40+4 and only started engaging 2 weeks ago. I'm 3/5 engaged today, after a sweep yesterday. I asked the mw today whether she could estimate how long it would take now I'm 3/5...but she said it's not possible.

Hang on in there!

mears · 17/10/2007 12:20

3/5 technically means the head is engaged. It means that 2/5 of the head is in the pelvis. Unfortunately engagemnt does not let you know when labour will start.
