I'm 36 weeks and have been craving lots of fizzy drinks lately my boyfriend keeps shouting at me and my midwife said to avoid caffeinated drinks I don't drink a lot hardly ever but have been wanting it more but surely this can't cause any harm.... I've been through hell this pregnancy sickness and everything you could think of so if I want some Coca Cola I'm gonna drink some Coca Cola. 😤 is it really a bad thing?????

One can isn't going to hurt but why don't you buy the caffeine free one

Sheera1 · 07/11/2020 23:05

I sometime have one can a day of Irn Bru or Pepsi Max. I limit it to one and it isn't everyday mainly as I don't always bother. There is more caffeine in a cup of coffee. (I don't drink tea or coffee). Enjoy one wee pleasure!

Sheera1 · 07/11/2020 23:06

I drink mainly fizzy water and high juice as I don't really like still drinks. So refreshing. Also fresh orange and diet lemonade. X

lc86 · 07/11/2020 23:12

I'm terrible for Diet Coke, have at least 3/4 cans a day. 36 weeks pregnant and been like this all the way through, as I was on previous pregnancies xx

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 07/11/2020 23:13

I had severe hyperemesis and the ONLY liquid for 3 months I could stomach was full sugar coke. (I dont even like full sugar coke I would never drink it with the amount of sugar is has!!) But It was all I could drink that didnt instantly come back up.
DS is now a happy, healthy 5 month old baby. Neither of us had any health complications during my pregnancy or afterwards.
You go drink your coke and enjoy it!!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 07/11/2020 23:16

You need to watch your caffeine intake overall. Do you drink tea or coffee or eat chocolate ? Your limit is 200mg each day and this is because too much caffeine can harm your baby. I dont know how much is in a coca cola but they do a caffeine free one.

Your boyfriend should not shout at you in general, but instead discuss his concerns calmly

kmkkkkkk · 07/11/2020 23:20

@TheDaydreamBelievers how does it harm them and well he doesn't necessarily shout he just has a bit of a go and makes me feel like I'm doing something really bad and as though I don't care about my baby just cause I want a bit of coke I drink a lot of water and juice and eat a lot of fruit as well

Tell your boyfriend that it's your body and if you want to mainline black tar heroin, you will. You're a bloody grown up who gets to decide what to put in your own mouth.

I drank half caff. tea during pregnancy. Would you feel happier with no caffeine and caffeine coke mixed?

GlitteryFluff · 07/11/2020 23:29

According to nhs website too much caffeine can cause low birth weight and miscarriage.

Info here..

www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/should-i-limit-caffeine-during-pregnancy/

I drink Diet Coke when pregnant, but I make sure I fall within the 'allowance'.

kmkkkkkk · 07/11/2020 23:30

@GlitteryFluff I don't think I will be having a miscarriage I am 36 weeks haha

TheDaydreamBelievers · 07/11/2020 23:30

The evidence is mixed @kmkkkkkk but overall high caffeine intake is associated with a higher risk of early misscarriage and low birth weight (and infants with a low birth weight are more likely to have later health issues). That's why the NHS reccomend limiting caffeine

TheDaydreamBelievers · 07/11/2020 23:31

Heres the nhs page on it @kmkkkkkk www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/should-i-limit-caffeine-during-pregnancy/#:~:text=If%20you're%20pregnant%2C%20limit,health%20problems%20in%20later%20life.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/11/2020 23:34

According to the NHS she can have five cans of coke a day. Plus she's 36 weeks so it's all a moot point anyway!

gluteustothemaximus · 07/11/2020 23:34

I had a very sick pregnancy with all 3, but craved full sugar coke only with number 1.

He's fine.

Although he does love Coca Cola Grin

Rainb0wDrops · 07/11/2020 23:38

A can of original Coke has about 35mg and Diet Coke has 45mg so to stay under the recommended daily allowance you could have at least 4 cans - bearing in mind there's caffeine in tea/coffee/chocolate so it depends what else you're having.
I'd not be happy about being shouted at though. You need to understand the risks and make your own choices.

Rainb0wDrops · 07/11/2020 23:39

And yes if this is only just coming up at 36 weeks it's not going to have a significant impact on birth weight. You're almost full term.

Thirty2andBlue · 07/11/2020 23:40

I craved coke during pregnancy too! I stocked up on the caffeine free coke, because I don't drink regular coke normally it tasted fine to me. Didn't help with the heartburn though 🤣

Spottysausagedogs · 07/11/2020 23:53

I also had hyperemesis and couldn't stomach anything other than full sugar coke for months, I was having 3 cans a day at one point and that was the only liquid passing my lips. It wasn't the high point of my life! I also had huge problems brushing my teeth as this also knocked me sick, just a warning to try to look after your dental health, I ended up having a root canal after my pregnancy and I do blame the coke/lack of brushing as I have always had fairly healthy diet and never usually have that much sugar 😬
My kids however are absolutely fine and don't seem to have been affected. At the time I was taking anti sickness drugs which I was far more worried about, but thankfully I needn't have been.

MigGril · 08/11/2020 09:22

They brought in the strick limit on caffeine drinks mainly due to the increase in people drinking posh coffee from places like star bucks (other brands available) they have way more caffeine in then say your standard instant coffee you drink at home.

When people where only drinking instant you'd need to drink like more then 6 or 7 coffees a day for it to be an issue. But 2 fancy coffees and your over the limit, that's why they suddenly went oh we need to tell people to limit caffeine. I drank a lot of coke during pregnancy no 2. Like others have said you can have upto 6 cans a day, just have white chocolate 😉.

user1493413286 · 08/11/2020 09:27

Could you not have caffeine free Coke? Or is that not really hitting the spot? Keep within the caffeine allowance but apart from that go for it

Terriblecreature · 08/11/2020 09:38

I have drank fizzy juice in both pregnancies, coke zero and diet irn bru. I also drink tea and coffee but not everyday. If I have a day where I am not drinking tea or coffee I allow myself 3 cans of juice. If I have a coffee I have that and 1 juice. As long as u stick to being under the 200mg. A can of coke zero has 35mg so u r absolutely fine. Just need to remember chocolate gets taken into account OK though but u r fine to do this x

GrandTheftWalrus · 08/11/2020 09:49

I can only drink diet coke but I have bought the caffeine free stuff and it tastes the same. I also have decaff coffee and tea. So my main intake of caffeine would be chocolate but I cant eat it as it makes me feel sick.

anotherboyontheway · 08/11/2020 09:51

Currently pregnant with second baby, I loved fizzy drinks especially full fat coke with last baby and he was born on his due date at 9lb exact so not sure how true the "low birth weight" myth is... now 20 weeks with 2nd and have a glass of coke a day and measuring fine so problems so far! Give in to your cravings OP, you've only got a few weeks left so enjoy them😘 x

what of at 27weeks. I have a rough tummy and using antacids always leave me with a different toilet issue and obviously we re not allowed Imodium. I always drank coke if I had a tummy ache.... to be honest I drank coke a lot that was my soda drink.
I quit coffee, tea etc as soon as i found out i'm pregnant. I has a cup of decaff tea yesterday didn't finish it. I think throughout my pregnacy i've had 2 cups of coffee,3 decaff tea and 3 hot chocs which btw i had no clue had caffine.
Is it bad to have a can at 27 weeks?
