Currently in labour. What to cook DH?

I am 40+3 and I think I am in slow early labour. Contractions about 9 minutes apart, have been going since about 7am. Sometimes they widen to 11 minutes for a while, sometimes back to 7 for an hour or so, but they are mildly painful. I am at home, DH is in work, DD is in nursery. On my last labour I was having contractions for 36 hours, 25 of which were in hospital. Poor DH only brought snack bars and crisps with him. I was in so much panic and pain I begged him not to leave me to go to the canteen. He was absolutely falling apart with hunger by the time DD arrived. I sent him home 2 hours after she was born because he was a shell of a man.

This time around I want to be prepared and I need to stay upright to bring these contractions on, so I am going to cook. What do you think I should cook that we can bring in in tubs, he can eat cold, but will be a sort of dinner substitute? Pasta of some form?

What???

CodenameVillanelle · 05/11/2020 11:08

I mean why are you thinking about cooking him food when you are in Labour? Can't the man eat sandwiches? Can't he make his own sandwiches??

IgorThalia · 05/11/2020 11:09

Tell him to cook his own bloody dinner!

Holyrivolli · 05/11/2020 11:10

Assuming we haven’t jumped in a time warp back to 1950, why the hell can’t he sort out his own food. He’s a grown up and should be able to feed himself.

mumsnoangel · 05/11/2020 11:10

Yes pasta is a good idea as nice hot or cold. Hot food is much more comforting, though, so do you have a thermos type canister you can put this into?

Flaunch · 05/11/2020 11:11

Is in completely incapable?

BeeFarseer · 05/11/2020 11:11

If it's slow, early labour and you are looking for something to distract yourself, then by all means, cook some food to take to the hospital. Especially if you will be more relaxed knowing you have food there.

The question of why your DH isn't capable of sorting this for himself... well. Not the time to get into it really.

Lsquiggles · 05/11/2020 11:11

OP this is so sad please focus on yourself and let your husband sort himself out, he's a grown man

DamnShesaSexyChick · 05/11/2020 11:12

I’m sure he’ll live.

mumsnoangel · 05/11/2020 11:12

Ignore the negative comments, op. Your hubbie is at work and I'm guessing you are looking for a distraction and may find cooking quite a good way to keep your mind off things. Of course if your dh was at home too he could prepare the food for later...

Dollywilde · 05/11/2020 11:12

I think everyone’s missing the point - OP’s DH is at work, she wants to be upright, it’s something to do. I was in latent labour for 3 days, I did a lot of laundry Grin

Pasta seems good OP, I’d make sure it’s something you like too so you can share if you’re not nil by mouth and you fancy it! Minimal cutlery too might be an idea so you could always have a crack at a picnic pie if your pastry is up to it?

Ohalrightthen · 05/11/2020 11:12

My gut instinct is to agree with Villanelle, BUT when i was in early labour i painted the spare room because i was suddenly super stressed by the idea that DH would have to do it after the baby was born, so i do kinda get it.

What about basic ragu? Mince, tomatoes, veg. Can be chucked in the freezer, perfect on pasta, jacket potatoes, toast. Or a nice stew?

FlyNow · 05/11/2020 11:13

Is this a sort of reverse? Let me guess, your DH asked you to cook something and you are pissed off?

PostItJoyWeek · 05/11/2020 11:13

You have gone quite mad Grin

Tell DH to pick himself a sandwich on the way home.

If you really want to cook, I'd go with something that won't be easily spilled, doesn't stain, can be eaten without cutlery and is OK cold. Spanish omelette?

Good luck Flowers

ImFree2doasiwant · 05/11/2020 11:13

Well , he is at work and OP wants to cook, and wants him with her while in labour. Therell be a micriwave id tgink?

Pasta will be fine, or you could make some egg muffins, or quiche?

Id also make some sandwiches, in case it takes a while.

justicedanceson · 05/11/2020 11:13

You are joking right????

Mylittlesandwich · 05/11/2020 11:14

It's your call and it's obviously up to you what you do with your time but it does sound a bit odd that your DH can't sort himself food. I'd either go for something that would taste ok cold like pesto pasta or quiche. Failing that I'd just make a pile of sandwiches.

Meowza74 · 05/11/2020 11:14

What?!

Dollywilde · 05/11/2020 11:14

Also worth pointing out that given current rules, once her DH is on the ward he won’t be able to pop to the shop or canteen. So if he comes home and they head straight to hospital she’ll need to get something prepared for him, it’s the way things are right now.

Ohalrightthen · 05/11/2020 11:14

Am a moron and missed the bit where you want something he can eat on the go...

I still say ragu - do him spag bol, but maybe penne not spag?

FlyNow · 05/11/2020 11:15

I think everyone’s missing the point - OP’s DH is at work, she wants to be upright, it’s something to do.

If that was the case I'm sure she'd say that instead of all the stuff about how he was a shell of a man?

helloxhristmas · 05/11/2020 11:15

Assuming this is because you want to be distracted can you bake a cake or biscuits? Not much else I can think of that would be nice cold apart from a pasta salad but that's not going to sit around well in a boiling hospital room.

Get him to buy some sandwiches / sausage rolls/ pasties.

MaverickDanger · 05/11/2020 11:16

Just make him some sandwiches, he won’t be able to leave you to go and get food this time.

WoooImAGhost · 05/11/2020 11:16

Pasta with sauce, sandwiches are probably easiest.

Though if I were you I'd sent him to the shops for a lunch to go meal and make yourself a cake and eat it Grin

MummaBear4321 · 05/11/2020 11:17

Wow.

I am just trying to keep myself distracted, upright and occupied. I like to cook. I have found sitting down slow the contractions down. Relax. I am not some 1950s housewife. I am just looking to calmly get through labour and I am trying to be organised. This isnt some feminist issue. Sheesh.
