First BFP what now?

Good morning,

I got my BFP last night. I have worked out dates and worked out I’m due 12th June so I’m 8 weeks pregnant Smile

This is my first baby so I am complete confused as what I do next. Do I have to see my GP or do I do a self referral to the midwife? (I was awake all night reading posts lol)

I’m still in slight shock if I’m honest, and feel so rough. I feel sick 90% of the day but not been sick yet. My boobs are sore too, but I’m so so so happy.

Congratulations! I've learnt that it really depends on what area you are in. My GP asked me to ring back after 8 weeks so I just went online and did a self referral. I ended up getting a call before 8 weeks and booking appt booked in at 8 weeks.

I was really surprised that they didn't give more information out earlier on taking folic acid and vitamin d so just make sure you're taking those straight away if you haven't already.

Positive to hear of your symptoms, I'm just entering second trimester so they are finally subsiding! But I found them strangely reassuring for the first few weeks!

Thank you, I’m going to give the dr’s a call today and see what they say. Just want to see someone for reassurance. Although I have done 3 very positive tests it don’t feel real yet if that makes sense.

I will pop out on my lunch break and get some folic acid and vitamin D. Thanks for that

I know I shouldn’t moan about the sick feeling it is constant all day no matter what I eat or drink. But I’m trying to embrace it as it will all be worth it in the end. As you say they are reassuring. The cramps seem to have eased up now which were quite a worry, I just have a weird feeling that I can’t quite explain.

I’m glad to hear these symptoms start to ease off.

X

Congratulations! I called my GP and she gave me the number for calling the midwifery service for a booking in appointment. I remember finding it a bit odd that I didn’t actually have to prove I was pregnant at any point!

If you google your hospital name + self referral maternity you’ll easily see if that’s how you can do it.

eternalflame2020 · 05/11/2020 09:26

@tpupz1 I totally get what you mean and as it's my first I thought the gp would confirm I was pregnant before anything else happened but that is not the case!

The first person you shoyld see is a midwife for a booking in appointment after 8 weeks and they take bloods and urine sample then. I know in some areas these appts are being done over the phone but where I am if it's your first baby then they are seeing everyone face to face.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 05/11/2020 09:34

Yeah it varies area to area. No one confirmed I was pregnant till the first scan! Like others, I was surprised no one mentioned folic and vitamin d but luckily was already on it

In my area you can self refer to the community midwives. My GP couldnt have cared less! They had nothing to do with my pregnancy. I phoned the maternity unit at my local hospital who pointed me in the right direction. Perhaps you could do the same? Then you'd know for sure.

Tpupz1 · 05/11/2020 16:35

Thanks all, I will do the online referral tonight. My dr’s is not the easiest to get an app at and now it’s even worse. I have also been and got my folic acid and vitamin D.

I’m now in two minds about booking a private scan just to check everything is ok! Has anyone had one?

I didnt. If you do, dont book too early as it can be hard to see things and it might just be a worry . No earlier than week 8 I'd say

Tpupz1 · 05/11/2020 18:00

Thanks, the nhs website dates me at 8 weeks.
This is why I’m in two minds I don’t want to worry myself by having it.

I’m going to see what OH says

I had one. It gave me peace of mind.

eternalflame2020 · 05/11/2020 18:58

Yes I had one at 7 weeks 4 days and found it reassuring. The reason people say not too early is because it can be too early to see the heartbeat even though everything is fine and then it does the opposite of reassuring!!
