No idea how far along I am

Hi all,

I'm really new to all of this! I had a positive pregnancy test last week (27th October). However, this has happened straight after coming off the pill. I know it's recommended to wait until your first natural period but hey ho! Because of this I have no idea how far along I am. I had my withdrawal bleed starting on 28th September.

So far I've experienced some lower back pain, heightened sense of smell and some very mild nausea in the mornings.

I wanted to book an early private scan but as I have no idea how far along I am I don't know when to book it...and waiting for my NHS one in late December seems so far away!

Any help much appreciated :)

When did you have sex since coming off the pill?

Dating will be based on when you last had a bleed until your nhs dating scan. Expect the dates to change at that scan.

I personally wouldn't consider having a private scan before I was about 8 weeks (or four-ish weeks after positive test).

I'd just count your withdrawal bleed as the first day of your period for ease given that your positive test was a month later it won't be too far out to date from it.
So I'd say you're about 5 weeks. IMO a good time for an early scan is around 8 weeks.

Had it a few times before my withdrawal bleed & again week of 5th & week of 12th October so I'm assuming it probably happened on one of those weeks?

Ah ok, thanks guys! That makes sense. I was thinking of trying to hold off on the early pregnancy scan. Do people think they're worth it? It's mainly because of my impatience rather than any previous bad experiences.

I had an early reassurance scan with my first at about 8.5 weeks, it did put my mind at ease and meant I felt able to tell family before Christmas as my nhs scan was booked for January.

This time round I didn't go for an early scan as it was the height of lockdown and although there was a place open I felt it wasn't necessary. I did go for a later private scan though so my dh and ds could attend as no one has been able to come with me to any of my nhs appointments.

Hi!
I can completely relate to your situation.
I’d previously been on the pill for 10+ years and only came off it the first week of October to start trying for a baby, and on Friday 30th I had 2 positive pregnancy tests! I have been in touch with the doctor and midwife but I feel the same as you a little bit lost because there is nothing to do in the mean time other than wait for an appointment when I am between 8-10 weeks. Also like you because I’ve got pregnant straight off the pill I can’t go off my last period to work out how far along I am, I am 90% we conceived on 13th October or 17th at the latest which would be 3 weeks ago so does that mean I am 3 weeks pregnant? But then I’ve read they add 2 weeks onto it from before you conceived so am I actually 5 weeks now?! It’s all so confusing and overwhelming. I don’t think it’ll feel real until I have a scan and see for myself!
I’ve also been getting really bad stomach cramps every day but no bleeding, have you experienced this?

Hey Jessie!

It's a relief to hear from someone in the same situation as me! I've tried googling a lot and surprisingly couldn't find anything helpful so in glad I came to mumsnet!

Your timings and situation are pretty much exactly the same as mine! I was on the pill for around 9 years, came off and had my withdrawal bleed on the last week of September and I think we either conceived on the week of 5th October or the week of 12th. When I did my self referral to the hospital I just gave them my withdrawal bleed as the date of my last period but stated that it was a withdrawal bleed. They booked me in for a scan on 21 December but I haven't heard anything else or spoken to anyone.

I've had mild cramping on and off but nothing too severe. It's usually worse in the evenings for me. I've also had mild nausea mainly in the mornings and occasionally the afternoons but I haven't been sick. And I've had sore breasts and heightened sense of smell

You add 2 weeks onto date of ovulation / conception (roughy)

jessiecxo · 04/11/2020 13:12

It just seems like such a long wait now doesn’t it like I’m even tempted to take another test, I think I was expecting to have to physically go to the doctors and them confirm it. Because of covid my appointment with the midwife understandably is over the phone which like I said isn’t until I’m 8-10 weeks and even then that’s not a scan just a talk over the phone! I’ve been feeling nauseous as well but bad cramping, no bleeding so I’m trying not to worry too much about it. Keep me updated on how you get on and congratulations @jemb93 Smile xxx
