Maternity grant for second?

I’m pregnant with my second, but I didn’t claim the maternity grant with my first, my midwife has told me to try for it this time as she’s sure she had another lady that got it for her second.
I just wondered if anyone had actually received it for a second if they hadn’t claimed it for their first?? Everything I’ve read online says first child only but nothing about if you didn’t claim for your first.

I'm pretty sure it's first child only, no matter the circumstances. The idea is to be able to buy baby stuff. The assumption is that those with a child already will have a lot of these things

You only get it for the first - unless you are having twins the second time; there are a few circumstances; Or unless the first child no longer lives with you and you don't receive child benefit for the first child.

You can always call the helpline and speak to them.

I thought so, midwife was insisting I sent a form in anyway. It’s been 9 years since my first so I don’t have any of the baby stuff and I didn’t know I could claim it then so I never did.

Is it the £600 one? You get £600 for your first then any child after that you £300 no? Or is that something different?
