I have just today found out that I am 5.5 weeks pregnant (first baby and I am SO excited). I've thrown the cigs away immediately BUT until last night I have been smoking 20 a day so therefore I've been smoking heavily for 3 weeks whilst pregnant. I'm so scared I've messed it all up already, should I go to the doctors for a check up? What do I need to do?

You'll probably be more than fine, I would talk to the doctor before quitting cold turkey - I'm sure bub is fine, try not to worry too much x

Aquamarine1029 · 30/10/2020 12:26

Please relax, op. Your baby is just fine. There isn't even an umbilical cord yet. Congratulations on your pregnancy and reach out for support if you need help to stop smoking.

Oneandabean · 30/10/2020 13:29

You’ll be fine there’s no umbilical cord yet. I was smoking and drinking until the night before I found out. I stopped straight away and baby is growing fine.

PumpkinsPatch · 30/10/2020 13:38

Baby will be fine so far.

Huge well done for taking immediate action but do please contact your midwife/doctor for support quitting if you need help.

Wishing you all the best for your pregnancy. X

I agree with the others, I'm sure smoking before 6 weeks won't have hurt the baby. They are really tiny at this stage and don't need much from you in order to do what they should be doing. Put your energy instead into working out what support you can get to quit so that the rest of your pregnancy is smoke free. Best of luck.

Changethetoner · 30/10/2020 13:48

No, you're baby is not likely to be stunted in growth or brain damaged by your smoking. But make sure you stay stopped, or it could happen.

ForeverRedSkinhead · 30/10/2020 13:51

Try to stop worrying op , you've quit straight away and that's great. Make sure you take your FA if you've not started already.

Congratulations.

CremeEggThief · 30/10/2020 13:55

It'll be fine. I was binge drinking and smoking about 10 spliffs a day around the time I conceived (Christmas/New Year in Ireland for context, so out on the piss every other night), so I thought I'd better tell the gp. She was even more casual about it than I was, even though at first she thought I'd said cocaine rather than cannabis.Grin Even that didn't seem to faze her!

ZolaGrey · 30/10/2020 14:17

I was mainlining a month of antibiotics and naproxen for the first month of being pregnant (before I found out). Apparently it wasn't a cause for concern and ten years on, she's absolutely fine!

Geppili · 30/10/2020 15:20

Your baby will be ok. I used NRT during pregnancy

CodenameVillanelle · 30/10/2020 15:21

Baby will be fine, but make sure you don't start again!

LayingLow · 31/10/2020 07:04

I smoked until 20 weeks with baby number 1 I was young and selfish. Only gave up when I started to feel baby move because I felt guilty. Im now pregnant with baby number 4 and havent smoked since!!!!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 31/10/2020 07:08

It’s not unusual OP, baby will be fine now you’ve given up. I was unknowingly pregnant during a summer of weddings/bbqs/pub gardens drinking far too much. Really worried but midwife couldn’t care less and babies were fine.

DeadButDelicious · 31/10/2020 07:27

You didn't know and as soon as you did know you stopped. Thats brilliant. Giving up smoking is hard, don't be afraid to seek support. 👍🏻

Isadora2007 · 31/10/2020 07:30

It’s great you’ve given up now and yes by all means seek support if you need it. But many women can and do just stop and it isn’t harmful. Vaping during pregnancy is though- so don’t believe people who say otherwise.
