Sweep stories

I had a sweep yesterday afternoon and after some intense period like pains last night I've woken up to feeling totally normal again 😒

Does anyone have any personal stories of sweep successes? I'm 39+1 and so impatient to meet this little guy!

It might be that you’re just not ready yet. 39 is quite early. Is there a reason they’re doing it so soon?

Sairafina · 27/10/2020 12:28

No, no reason. I had my weekly appointment with the obstetrician and whilst she was examining my cervix she said she could sweep if I wanted her to. I'm not in the UK so perhaps it's more normal here?

I would look into it a bit more. A sweep is a form of induction (with risks) that isn’t giving your body the chance to get there itself. Especially as you’re only 39 w I would hold tight longer. Even though it’s hard!

A sweep only works if your body is ready. I know lots of women who have had sweeps and not one has said it worked at all so I’m doubtful they do much. At 39 weeks you’re likely not ready yet so very doubtful it would do anything except be uncomfortable.

Ah well, it was worth a shot! Thanks for your comments, shall try and exercise patience 😂

Sorry but I had about 6 sweeps with a very overdue baby and they still did absolutely nothing.
One sweep it felt like her hand was coming out of my mouth so it's not like she didn't have a good old rummage either.
Good luck! Not long now!

Hi. I went into labour with DC2 at 40+4 following my third sweep. My waters broke the next morning.
A lot of people on here seem very against sweeps but I was very keen to avoid another medical induction when my first had ended in EMCS. I will be having sweeps again from 38 weeks this time as if he hasn't arrived at 40 weeks they will medically induce me.
Good luck xx

With DS1 I had one at 40+1 as thats when i was seeing my midwife. I'd already had 2 nights of what i think was v early labour/mild contractions but they kept subsiding once i was up for the day, so I was getting frustrated and keen to get things moving if possible - which they did! Appt and sweep was midday and by mid afternoon contractions were coming thick and fast and DS was born 2am the next day. My body was obviously starting the process but the sweep got it all moving...so it worked for me but I guess if your bodys not ready it might do nothing. Good luck and get all the rest you can in the meantime! x

Sex is more effective.

Midwife told me it only works if your body is more or less ready, but it could help speed you up by a few days. I declined at 40 weeks, but then had one at 40+8 and went into labour that night.

I had a (second) sweep at 39+5 at 11am and was contracting by 1pm. Had the baby at 1pm the following day!

Good luck, hope it works for you!

Thank you for sharing your stories, both positive and negative.

Sex is definitely more fun! I've told DH that we were doing it daily to get pregnant so we'll be cracking on again daily until he's here, didn't seem to get any complaints 😆
