Hey everyone.
I'm 10 weeks pregnant today.
I just received a phone call from the midwife saying I have group B strep in my urine which apparently can be really dangerous for the baby when giving birth 😩 I'm going to collect antibiotics in a minute.
I've googled it but there's lots of info about giving birth and having it.
Hardly any info of having it in early pregnancy.
Has anyone had any experience with this?do the antibiotics clear it up?
Many thanks x

I had it in early pregnancy too, I took the antibiotics and that was all. They don’t re test or anything to see if it’s gone after you’ve finished the course.
Strep B can come and go throughout your Pregnancy, it’s only when it comes to labour that it can potentially pass to the baby but that’s why you are offered antibiotics during labour.
I am now 32 weeks and I’ve been offered to have a swab done at 34 weeks to see if I have it again, but as it can come and go, it will have no impact or give me any further knowledge as to whether I will have it during labour.
I will have the antibiotics as a precaution anyway.
It’s not caused me any problems throughout my pregnancy so try not to worry Smile

I don't think group b strep actually matters until it comes to the birth which is why you're recommended to have the test at 36 weeks.

I tested positive at 36 weeks so I had to have antibiotics during labour and my son had to have them once he was born. A friend of mine had it without knowing and her son then contracted meningitis so it really is worth taking the antibiotics if you have it.

Don't worry, it's very very normal - apparently about 25% of people have it at any time. It can't cause any harm to the baby at this stage.

I wonder why they have tested you for it now? It seems as though it wouldn't do any good and could just cause unnecessary panic.

There’s a great probiotic you can take - I think it’s Jarrow fem dophilus. Has proven to be really effective. I would try this especially if you’re going down the anti b route.

I tested positive in my first pregnancy. I had antibiotics during labour and because my waters had broken for a good few hours before labour started, my baby was given antibiotics too.

From what I read at the time, it’s more of an issue if you have it and it’s not picked up on as babies can get meningitis like a previous poster said. If you’re aware and treated you’ll be ok!

I was discovered to have it just after I had my DD. They gave her antibiotics and everything was absolutely fine. It should be on the radar now so you can have the antibiotics during labour if necessary. Try not to worry about it.

I had Group B Strep - just meant I had some antibiotics during labour. It's better to know than not to know.
