Does stretch & sweep work?!

Hello!

I'm 39+3 and had a sweep today, midwife said she could fit 2 fingers, cervix soft and starting to shorten. She said baby's head 2/5th out? She said could be a sign of things starting, I've had lots of Braxton Hicks and back pain persistently for last few weeks.

I think I just want some success stories, I know it doesn't work for everyone... first baby few years ago was over by 10 days and I can't face the same again! Confused
Thanks xx

I think your body has to be ready for sweep to be successful and it sounds like you are so fingers crossed for you

simbobs · 22/10/2020 18:12

Oh yes, it works. Well it did for me.

Thatwentbadly · 22/10/2020 18:14

There is absolutely no research which says they do work.

readyforroundtwo · 22/10/2020 18:59

I had two, one at 39 weeks and then another at exactly 40 weeks. I'm not sure if it worked but I went into labour at 40+5

wishthiswasreallife · 22/10/2020 19:00

I had two,one on my due date and one 7 days later and still went 11 days overdue 😭

Thanks for taking the time to reply... seem to do absolutely nothing or they work well for some people. I had sweep twice last time did nothing. Midwife has offered to do another one "belts and braces" next week in case I need it here's hoping not!

Nothing so far except tiny bit of bloodstaining straight afterwards.

How come they've done sweeps early for you guys? They won't give me one until my due date

callistography · 22/10/2020 20:51

Worked very very well for me both times!

Eep2020 · 22/10/2020 21:32

Laanie they offered it to me because I went over on first baby, I've said I didn't want to be induced again so sweeps to try and encourage her out! Hope you're not waiting too long

I think it's like 1 in 8 they will start off labour, so it's not great odds!

I had 3 with DS1 and they did nothing. Had 1 with DS2 as part of induction (I'd already had a gel the day before but it had to be removed due to hyperstimulation) which helped start some contractions going, but then I continued with induction so I'm not sure if the sweep alone would have been enough.

Hello, congratulations for being almost there. Nit long to go till you have your little one. Am currently 27 weeks myself.

I had a sweep at 40 weeks plus 2days to get things going with my 4th child, born 2018.
I was already 1 to 2cm dilated, so that also helped. I think it was later that day or the next day I lost my mucus plus and went into labour the day after that.

A wonderful 32 hour labour. Hard work but all worth it in the end.

Sex also helps and dancing.

Hi popsicle, congratulations to you too! I'm glad it seemed to work for you and good luck with your new one on the way.
Sock queen - seems to work if your baby and body is ready for it from most people's experience! Thanks for answering.

Unfortunately it seems to have done nothing or things are happening very slowly. Lost some mucous tinged with blood day after, day after that I thought contractions were starting but then slowed down to nothing. Back pain persists throughout....

Looks like my girl might not be an October baby as planned. Please hurry! Next sweep booked for Thursday and c section being booked if no appearance by then.
