Pregnancy Unknown Location

Hi all,

I’ve just come back from an early scan and been told it’s a pregnancy unknown location. Midwife thought I was 7 weeks 4 days based on my positive test date (I was unsure of last period date as they are so variable) but now I’m just hoping that this is wrong and I’m just too early for anything to be detected. I’ve not had any bleeding or pain so I was quite distressed to see nothing on the scan. Been in tears since I got home as now feel like something is wrong. Anyone been through similar?

What exactly did the sonographer say? Did you go for an early scan for medical reasons or was it private?

EmmyT2020 · 18/10/2020 14:16

@bm2021 It was private, just for peace of mind really although that’s obviously now backfired on me. The sonographer just said they couldn’t find anything and will be letting my GP know to begin tests to find out what’s going on.

Sounds like you might need to get to the EPU for a scan. Or at least speak to them and explain the situation, they should be able to give you an idea of what's going on. Sorry I can't be of any help/reassurance, hopefully some more knowledgable folk will be along to advise... it doesn't seem like the sonographer was all that helpful in what your next steps should be though as you're obviously going to be feeling very confused and/or upset until you get some answers. Good luck!!

This happened to me back in March but my private sonography referred me to the EPU where I had a scan 2 weeks later and it was confirmed. I didn't have any pain or bleeding at all and it resolved itself over the course of 4 months.

Yeh I had this with my first pregnancy only I was certain with my dates so it was a little clearer for me. You should contact your early pregnancy clinic and advise them you had a private scan. The problem with a preg of unknown location is it could be an ectopic. That's what they try to rule out as soon as possible. I ended up having about 14 blood tests, one every 48 hours to check if HCG is going down or up. If it goes up they should be able to find baby in a trans vaginal scan. If they can't and it is going up they may treat you as if it's ectopic. Mine went up but didn't double so that ruled out a viable pregnancy and they were on standby to give me drugs to end it but eventually it started to come down again. Sorry you're going through this. I would say take it as it comes. First phone and see what they say. The dates may just be off.

I would definitely contact your local EPU as soon as possible. You should also get HCG bloods 48 hours apart because you need to rule out anything dramatic like an ectopic pregnancy. This happened to me last month and the EPU were amazing. Don’t be afraid to be pushy if you need to see them. Good luck xxx

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your comments. The GP managed to get me in at the EPU yesterday and I had a second scan there. They could see a sac but no yolk or embryo so they think it’s either too early or a silent miscarriage. I have to back next Monday for another scan to see if the pregnancy is progressing so hoping and praying that everything will be ok. Just off work at the moment as my emotions are all over the place and struggling to focus on anything. Thanks again for your support xx
