Not reassured from reassurance scan!

I just had my private reassurance scan. I'm 7+3 according to dates but measured at 5+6! The sonographer was very optimistic saying 'this happens all the time' and I won't really know when I conceived so may be less than I think. She was trying to be very reassuring which was nice to hear but I'm just not convinced. My lmp was 22nd Aug and positive OPK on day 15. The scan (which was transabdominal) showed a sac and york emerging but that was it. Im just left very unsure. Repeat scan in 2 weeks. Anyone been in same position and all been ok?

Were you offered a transvaginal scan? It's really too early to see anything via abdominal scan so don't panic!

Chopsuey1 · 13/10/2020 17:34

No. I think she made her mind up from the findings that it wouldn't change the plan ie.cos only sac and yolk seen, doing a transvaginal wouldn't change anything. But I was surprised that wasn't offered tbh.

I had a scan at what I thought was 7 ish weeks but was actually 6. This was at the EPU due to bleeding.

Transabdominally only a yolk sac was visible with nothing to see inside. The sonographer then performed a transvaginal scan and, with a bit of bit of patience, was able to identify not only an embryo but a little heartbeat. I'm now 27+5 and everything seems to be great.

I'm not at all surprised that nothing was seen transabdominally as in my understanding it's very difficult to see anything that way at the very early stages, but I am surprised that a transvaginal wasn't offered.

Not sure I have any advice except try to keep in mind that seeing nothing transabdominally is pretty normal at that stage.

Will they charge you again for the repeat scan at two weeks? I don't want to be a cynic but it all seems a bit of a rip-off to me.

Chopsuey1 · 13/10/2020 20:23

Well interestingly there is no extra charge for the follow up scan so now ulterior motive. But yea, think it would have been a better reassurance scan if it was transvaginal. Now I have to wait over 2 weeks as no available slots in 2 weeks!

Sorry op I think you just have to wait. There isn't much certainty of anything before about 10 weeks. Flowers Btw my early scan was also out a week.

hellymum21 · 13/10/2020 21:03

Sorry you're going through this! I just wanted to say the private scan company I used don't offer transvaginal so maybe others are the same x

babydust2412 · 13/10/2020 22:32

I had an early scan at what was 10 weeks going by dates but the size of baby put me at 8 weeks 5 days and this was a transvaginal scan. I'm now 23+6 weeks and baby boy is perfect so far, so don't lose hope ❤️

Just to add to your reassurance, a positive OPK just signals the surge in lutenising hormone - this doesn't always mean you have ovulated, as sometimes in a cycle you can get multiple surges before successfully ovulating.

It's very possible you had a later surge a week or so after and that was the one where your egg was released and lead to your pregnancy, which would mean you'd be thinking you were further ahead than you are

Thanks so much for everyone's replies. I'm so grateful for you all to have taken the time to reply to me.
I think you're right that the private sonographer doesn't do internals so it was a complete waste of time. The repeat scan is no extra money thankfully. Now I can understand why the she was so optimistic and reassuring! She probably knew that was the best view she was ever gona get!
