Weight gain in pregnancy - I’m now obese!

Before pregnancy, my BMI was 24.6. I ran 15k every week. Size 12-14 and 5’7.

I’m 13 weeks and apparently put on so much weight I’m obese! 30.1 is my BMI. I’m in size 14 maternity clothes but friends and family have said despite my bump I do not look as though I’ve gained weight.

I have HG so I’m really not eating much and vomiting every day.

Even the midwife looked confused and said “I didn’t think you were more than a size 14.”

I have to have a GTT test in January because I’m deemed obese.

Feel dreadful. Sad

I think with HG it’s more likely to be inflammation/fluid weight rather than anything else. I wouldn’t worry about it personally. I had GTT test. It’s not a comment on whether you’re doing good or bad so don’t feel bad about it.

10kg gain at 13 weeks really is a lot. I'd think there was something else going on and ask to see a gp personally.
I'm 34 weeks and have gained 9kg.

@Funkypolar

Thanks for the comments. My DH has told me not to worry about it.

Today I have managed to keep down a single slice of toast. I did try to tell the midwife that most food doesn’t stay down and she said not to binge on unhealthy food and eat brown bread and fruit. Binging would be extremely unlikely!

I had planned to do some light exercise today but vomiting 7 times and feeling weak and dizzy meant that didn’t happen.

I wouldn’t worry about it at all, it’s likely a boat load of retained fluid.

And ignore the nonsense about ‘binging’ on food. What a way to make you feel shit. I hope you feel better soonFlowers

Hi op, I gained 3 and a half stone in my HG pregnancy. Made no sense as I could hardly eat. I'm sure the midwife thought I was lying about my sickness! Conversely, in my other pregnancy where I didn't have HG I only gained 22lbs. Both times tested for GD but all clear. It makes no sense whatsoever! Both babies were comparable sizes too. You have my sympathy - pregnancy sucks! I'd recommend avoiding the scales for now. And don't try to exercise if you're dehydrated/vomiting - you'll faint! Take good care.

Bonkers. I wasn't weighted after my booking in appointment. Sounds really strange OP! Water retention? I gained 2 stone when pregnant and my BMI would have been 30.2 so obese. Lost 1 stone in the first 2 weeks then the rest gradually. I wouldn't worry, the first trimester is weird, will settle down by the second!

Spinksy9 · 15/10/2020 13:43

I was 13 stone when I first got pregnant. Due to my HG I went down to 12 stone. My bmi is 30.1 at present. I was be tested for GD in January. I am 14 weeks and am yet to put any weight on. Although I'm eating more I'm not putting weight on, which isn't a bad thing in terms of BMI but they will monitor BMI throughout pregnancy, due to increased health risks x

@Funkypolar I say you sit back, relax and take it one day at a time as we all carry pregnancies totally different. From the people with their tiny bump to the others with gigantic ones. Last pregnancy I didn't weigh myself post getting pregnant and I shan't be doing it now either. Post birth is the time to worry about weight in-between 101 feeds, nappy changes and some sort of meals.

Btw I am the person that looks 6 months pregnant and i'm 13 weeks.

NeuroMama · 15/10/2020 16:23

I didn't gain a huge amount in first trimester but by 34 weeks I had gained over 20kg (started at 80kg and 5'10). Like you I had no idea where it was as I had a tidy little bump and no obvious weight gain anywhere else. I'm now 9 days pp - had an average size baby with an average size placental and fluid volume - and I feel like I'm actually smaller than before pregnancy. No idea what I weigh but ending up with an obese BMI doesn't seem to have meant much

Essybird · 15/10/2020 19:24

I put on a stone in the first 6 weeks. Another stone by week 12. And then nearly nothing between week 12-30. And then another half a stone after that. Interestingly the weight gain profile by week was exactly the same in both my pregnancies! Everyone carries differently so try not worry..

NoNameIdeas · 15/10/2020 19:34

Just here to share sympathies! I'm currently 32.5 weeks (I think!) and after suffering miserably with sickness until week 12/13 I've seemingly managed to put on a ridiculous amount! Haven't been re-weighed by midwife yet though but I reckon I've put on about 15kg 😳 doesn't seem to matter what/when I eat either so just going with it. X

I really don't think you can use bmi as a measurement while you're pregnant.
