Just bought a prenatal listening system.. anyone esle got one??

because I can't hear anything! My LO is really un-cooperative she'll only kick when she wants to the minute my dh puts his hand on my tummy she stops still like musical statues and then the minute hje takes his hand away she moves again!!!

it's the first one so my hopes of hearing the LO are now dashed because she is tempermental at the best of times.. she would not move at all during my 20week scan even though an hour before hand she was disco dancing on my pelvis... she knows too much already!

how many weeks are you? what kind is it? the one that you strap on and have headphnes for? and also i guess it depends on the position of your placenta - mine is at the front so any movements are muted at the moment

its one with head phones and a belt that goes round me... I think my placenta in alteria or something like that.. obviously don't listen to my MW do I! I'm 26 weeks

i have one.....don't let it get you down. keep trying it, and don't forget to move the bit that goes on your belly as you might not have the right place....takes a while but is definately worth it!!!

I bought one of these and I have never been able to hear LO with it, I've stopped trying now!! think I might get a doppler like what the MW's use.

I have the proper doppler, bought it last pregnancy and it works really well, can't rememember when I used it from. But before I could feel movements. 10 weeks pregnant now, but haven't tried yet.

For the people who have bought and used a doppler, do you really understand what you are listening to, and would you recognise if there was a problem?

Please don't read this as a criticism, I am just interested whether you find it of bebefit or a source of concern.

i thikn they are a really bad idea, sorry, have read and heard lots of women being troubled by not finding heartbeat or it being too fast/ slow etc....

it can take a fully trained midwife a while to find a heartbeat, that is why they tend not to try and listen for it until around 16 weeks, and as nonametoday has said, would you even know what to listen for..

an anterior placenta, which i think is what you meant acts like a cushion and can muffle the feelings of movements, and would possibly make it harder to pick up HB

i think they can cause more concern for mums

Just listening to the heart beat, but do understand that sometimes you can't find the baby, does not mean the worst. I think it is a good bonding time for fathers who can't be at ante-natal appointments.

I can understand that a pregnant mum is happy to hear the heart beat of the baby, but I do caution using these items where they may cause worries that need not be.

Beyond 24 weeks I would say that observation of fetal movements is of greater bemefit.

Not wanting to spoil anyones enjoyment of listening the that fantastic sound.... b'dum b'dum b'dum!

freedom of choice - of course ! but IMHO< they are not a good idea, for the reasons i have outlined. some women may not realise that you can struggle to find a HB early on, or that position of placenta can have an impact .. i just think if you get one , use with caution.

I have borrowed one of these from a girl at work and i have to say they are a load of tosh.

I'm now 33+3 and only the other day did i actually find a very faint heart beat! I've been trying since about 20 something weeks! They are disheartening and i seriously wouldn't waste your money on buying one!

Wow just read the threads from last night! I fully understand where everyone is coming from.. am the kind of person who will fly into a blind panic.. but I read my notes about the position of my placenta and understand thatit can muffle sounds.. the MW has to have a good old dig as I said in my previous post she is not cooperative at all!
But me and dh fell asleep last night to the sound of our lo hb.. My dh said it made him feel close to her, it was a very good bonding exercise.. be warned if you do fall asleep the headphnes hurt being molded into your head!

Anyway it did take a good 20 mins to find her but I know exactly where she is at the moment in line to where my mw has found her with the doppler.

Some people understandably think it is a bad idea though x
