Suddenly got terrible acid reflux

Hi. This probably sounds silly as I know acid is a common pregnancy thing but I've never had it like this before and this is DC4!
I woke up last night with my throat on fire!
I feel sick, there is a pressure on my throat, it really hurts and has just suddenly come on.
I'm 25 weeks and this it only just appeared last night but it hasn't eased since.
Is this normal?
Thanks

Yes. Get the biggest bottle of gaviscon you can find.

LikeSilentRaindrops · 12/10/2020 14:37

Yes Grin mine arrived at about the same time - bottle of Gaviscon in every room, small swig when needed.

Grumpy19 · 12/10/2020 14:37

Thanks @JaneJeffer I just can't believe it's gone from nothing to agony in the space of a day! 😕

I had it really bad with DS1 a long time ago now. I remember guzzling Gaviscon out of the bottle in the middle of a shop when I was buying a cooker Grin

I've just had this start out of nowhere at 24 weeks. It's been keeping me up all night. I've got Omeprazole tablets now, and I'm also chomping on Gaviscon dual-action tablets (the liquid makes me gag). It gets better with some medication!

Grumpy19 · 12/10/2020 14:44

Oh no! Poor you! I've clearly been very luck with my three previous DC. Going to add Gaviscon to the Tesco list!

I had this with all three pregnancies. I remember vaccuuming was particularly difficult where you're slightly bent over. But no-one else I knew suffered, so think it only happens to the unlucky women who carry high up and the stomach gets squashed. Large bottle of liquid Gaviscon and just swig straight from the bottle!!

MichelleOR84 · 12/10/2020 14:48

Yup 😩! I’m on prescription omneprazole and I still drink gaviscon from the bottle . The pain of the acid reflux is so bad it’s literally nauseating.

Hi Grumpy19,
Yes it's normal unfortunately, I'm suffering with it too. Keep being woken up with an awful burning feeling in my throat and chest and i can't eat anything without getting really bad heartburn and reflux.

I've been glugging back peptac liquid (cheaper generic version of gaviscon you can get from pharmacies) but it isn't making much difference. I think I may have to ask my GP for some omeprazole capsules , it might be worth doing this if its really bad & liquid doesn't help you. They are safe to use during pregnancy.

Have you tried raising the top of your bed or having some extra pillows so you aren't lying as flat? Also avoid fatty/spicy foods. I'm really grumpy atm because I've had to give up all my favourites 😂 although not convinced it's making any difference. Hope it improves for you

I relate to this as I have a hiatus hernia which meant I had acid reflux even BEFORE pregnancy! Since pregnancy I have also been on 20mg omeprazole per day and it's changed my life. Like you, my worst symptoms before starting this were croaky voice and raw throat - and the feeling it was sometimes getting on my lungs, though my doc thought that wasn't possible. Our poor throats aren't equipped for stomach acid. Some women get hiatal hernias through pregnancy but mine came on a couple of months before I fell pregnant following a bout of serious vomiting on holiday!

I always sleep on my left side, which is better for acid reflux as the stuff has further to travel. If you need to heal your throat, I really recommend talking to your doc about omeprazole.

You probably already know this but small meals, no fizzy drinks and lay off the most citric of fruits. I do drink a little decaf coffee and eat chocolate still with no problems.

Good luck!

Omeprazole is definitely the way forward - I still get heartburn and acid reflux even on the omeprazole (but I've always had issues with it even pre-pregnancy) but it's nowhere near as horrendous as it was. I found the reflux and heartburn retriggered my morning sickness, but the omeprazole has stopped that.

futuredreams · 12/10/2020 22:33

I agree totally with @SJC270 Omeprazole is the best. Get from GP. Take in the morning though. And don't forget to take it. My acid reflux is so bad that if I forget to take that tablet and eat anything I eventually throw up. On Saturday I threw up on myself while driving SadSadSad it was quite the clean up. I was waking every night at about 1-2 am and throwing up. So bad.

Grumpy19 · 12/10/2020 23:28

Thanks. I've left a message for my GP so hopefully get to speak to him tomorrow. I have not to eaten for a while before bed and have lots of pillows propping me up. Still hurts though Sad
