Bacterial vaginosis during pregnancy?

Just had a call from the PAU to say a swab I had done last week has come back as having bacterial vaginosis. She said she will speak to the doctor when he comes in and call me back later regarding treatment.

Of course, I stupidly decided to google in the meantime and found tons of horror stories about BV causing premature labour (i'm only 24 weeks so terrified about this), low birth weight, late miscarriage etc so now i'm terrified that i'm going to lose my baby before they get me treatment for it. I've really struggled with health anxiety during pregnancy and this isn't helping!

Has anyone had BV during pregnancy and been fine? Just need some reassurance!

I had BV around 32ish weeks last time. Only found out as I had a slight bleed because of it. Everything was fine. I was given a course of antibiotics for a week and that was me. Didnt contact to retest and they never mentioned a thing about being worried/concerned. My wee girl came a week later as well 🤣 hope that helps

Hi!

Iv had in prior to pregnancy ( whilst trying to conceive) and it absolutely freaked me out just because it's nothing usually but when your pregnant and start to google all the horrible thoughts go through your head!

You will be fine! They will just give you the Bv tablets which are safe in pregnancy. I think it only affects anything if it's left untreated for a long time and gets increasingly worse.

I thought I still had it ( I'm 10+1) and then I thought I didn't as I had it before I conceived and it seemed to go away before I evan treated it as I was on holiday.
I will mention it to my midwife when I speak to her next week.

I honestly wouldn't worry, it will just be a case of taking the medication and it will be cleared up. It's such a common bacterial problem!

X

I had it before pregnancy and didn't really treat it - was just hoping it would go away. When I told my doc about it, she just told me to forget about it. Have you had any symptoms that lead to the swab?

SarahTTCx · 12/10/2020 19:53

@Mimiwish I had symptoms with increased and discoloured discharge and burning when I pee! I was so convinced it was a UTI but my urine came back clear!

Ah, in that case, treat it and it will go and all will be fine :) Try not to worry: there's way too much to worry about during pg! The list of things that can allegedly contribute to things going wrong (like having gingivitis, eating too much ginger, having too warm baths, etc) - honestly, just don't worry, sort it, and try to get on with things. We can send ourselves half mad with the what ifs!

soon as I gave birth and the bleeding slowed I began to realise I had BV.. got tested and I was right.. tried every tablet & cream/gel under the sun and nothing has worked I still have BV and will have to learn to live with it but after reading your post today it’s made me think that I probably had it while pregnant and didn’t know 🤔 hope you get it sorted
Go said change of body and hormones cause it and more than likely pregnancy
God knows x

Has anyone had bv whilst going into labour? Did it affect the baby at all?

blondieee · 31/01/2022 20:24

I had it during my pregnancy, just had to take some oral antibiotics and everything was absolutely fine Smile

Brownie97 · 31/01/2022 20:57

I had it when I was 33 weeks, they gave me 5 days antibiotics, I'm now 39 and I think its back again so was just worried if I go into labour and it's still there whether it would have any impact on baby If I don't get it treated in time, such a worry x
