Likelihood of twins

Hi everyone,

We're going for a scan tomorrow at 8+2 just out of curiosity as FTP's!

I just wanted to see if anyone knows a bit about the likelihood of twins based on family history. My dad is a twin and I should have been a twin but mum lost the other baby early on from what I know. Does this make my chances a lot higher of having twins or negligible difference? And what's the chances they'll be able to tell if twins tomorrow?

Thank you!

First off, congrats on your pregnancy! Twins is hereidtory and is hereidtory from your side of the family, not your partner's so there is a good chance!

Generally, older women who conceive at at a higher risk of having twins or women who have had IVF or used any ovulation drugs such as clomid.

At your scan tomorrow, they will be able to see how many babies are in there and if it's twins.

Congrats again and good luck! Flowers

Wishing the best for you x

Fraternal twins are hereditary, identical twins are not.

Yes, fraternal (non identical) twins are hereditary down mums genetic lines. It's still however much more likely that it will be a single baby

@MindfulMouse
My dad had fraternal twins (myself) and his sister had fraternal twins (my cousins) so i was also wondering if i had a higher chance.
At our first scan after seeing the embryo DP s asked "so where is the other one"!
But no. Just one in there 😁
Let us know!!

It's really very interesting. The incidence of identical twins (I.e from one egg) is the same the world over. But the risk of non identical twins (coming from more than one egg) varies considerably. Very high rates in Nigeria and very very low rates in Japan. Also more common in older mothers (start chucking out more than one egg a month a times).

Good luck!
