Cyclogest/Progesterone Side Effects?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently 6+3 weeks pregnant after 3 previous losses. The recurrent miscarriage clinic advised that I should take 2 x progesterone pessaries a day from the day of a positive pregnancy test which I have been doing (a little over 2 weeks ago).

I had an early scan yesterday and the baby had a good strong heartbeat which was lovely to see as we've never got that far before. However, since yesterday and again this morning I've been getting brown discharge/spotting. I'm struggling to get hold of the RMC and EPU and so I'm reaching out here. The scan was not internal so it can't be that but I've read that progesterone is known to cause brown spotting and cramping.

Has anyone else using progesterone experienced brown discharge/spotting along with some cramping?

TIA 😊

Yes. If using pessaries, they can irritate the cervix and cause spotting. Some women put their pessaries up the back passage for this reason - but I'd speak to the rmc before doing that.

I used cyclogest up the bum! I used it on ivf cycles and did have some discharge/bleed on both successful cycles but no idea if related or not. Best of luck

@physicskate @InescapableDeath Thank you both for your reassuring replies. I heard back from the RMC and they said to try it rectally. Hoping this will stop the brown spotting. Woke up this morning and the cramping has stopped and pregnancy symptoms are in full force which is good 😊 thank you both again.

I've also used it and had brown spotting too! Scary but absolutely fine xx

Hello

I was on OP, and I had very yellow chunky (sorry, TMI!!) discharge whenever it went up the front passage.
Started using the back passage and that all stopped.

Best of luck x

Sorry, I was on PP (progesterone pessaries)

Sarraa · 10/10/2020 12:51

@lenny12345 @reimah Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply to me. I started using them rectally last night and so far today I've only had a couple of spells of very light cramping and a tiny spot of brown so hopefully it's all healing up 😊. It's hard not to immediately jump to the worst case scenario so forums like this really help with that. Thanks again 😊

I was reading progesterone y twice daily after possess too and had some brown spotting on week 6. I was got a scan at 7 weeks and thankfully all was well and I'm now at 31 weeks. They're messy and adding but seemed to do the job for me! I started going to the bathroom or showering an hour after using them and it really helped with the irritation.

Thank you @mariadingbat.

The RMC said to change to using them rectally which I have been doing since Friday night. I'm still getting some brown spotting 😔 I'm hoping it'll take a few days to clear up and that it's nothing to worry about.
