Newborn clothes

Hi, ftm here was just reading a different post about what to pack for hospital bag and loads of people said not to use 0-3 months because of being to big....well guess what I have gone and done, bought every bit of baby clothing in size 0-3 months thinking that was the first size 🤦
He is apparently going to be a small baby as well. 🤐

Well, at least baby will wear them at some point! It's better than buying all newborn/first size and having a 10lber who wouldn't fit any of them!

ToxicTracey · 24/09/2020 08:14

I packed loads of 0-3 with my first as I thought the same. She was 7lb9 and fit in tiny baby babygrows for the first week then up to a month for a good few weeks after. Maybe buy a cheap pack of babygrows from asda or somewhere in newborn size so if he doesn't last long in them you've only wasted a few £ and can buy more if he will be in that size for a while.

SpacePug · 24/09/2020 08:18

Easy done, don't worry as they will be used after a month or two. My DS was 8lb 7 and newborn didn't fit. He was in 0-1 month for the first 3 weeks then 0-3 until he was 2 months old

sarahc336 · 24/09/2020 08:51

Yes 0-3 months can be massive. I'd go and buy a pack of new born vests and baby grows just for when they're first born. You won't waste the 0-3 months as they'll be in them around 4-8 weeks etc but for a new born that can be massive, unless you have a 9 pound plus baby Grin

olderthanyouthink · 24/09/2020 08:55

Don't worry they'll get there, that might be like my DD who only gets there a few months late though so hopefully it's not all too seasonal? (Woolly jumpers for summer for example)

bobloblawlawblog · 24/09/2020 08:57

I did exactly the same with DS, packed all 0-3 and they were huge on him (he was a medium size baby- 7lb11) and ended up having to get my parents to pop to the nearby Sainsbury's to get packs of newborn sleep suits and vests. Don't worry though, you will end up using all the 0-3 you've bought later on anyway so it's not a waste!

TheTeenageYears · 24/09/2020 09:05

DD was 8lb 10oz and still needed newborn size for the first month

orangejuicer · 24/09/2020 09:09

Another one with a 10lber! He was in newborn for a week Grin

MarshmallowsOnToast · 24/09/2020 09:10

Better to find out now.

I had a 9lb 7oz baby & 0-3 was too big which surprised me!

Thankfully we'd been given a few bits of second hand "newborn" stuff as I didn't bother buying any myself as I knew he'd be big.

Looking back at pictures he didn't move into 0-3 until 3-4 weeks old.

ginandtonicformeplease · 24/09/2020 09:15

Don't be surprised if newborn is too big for a small baby - some brands of newborn go up to 10lb. Even small newborn (up to 7.5lb) were too big for DD, but she quickly grew into them.

Sunnytimes04 · 24/09/2020 09:16

He is due in 3 weeks so better get a move on buying some newborn things! Even bought a little coat the other day to come back from the hospital in 0-3...they might still exchange it though fingers crossed. Haha so daft 🤦🤣

Sunnytimes04 · 24/09/2020 09:24

Thank you for thw link Marshmallow that's where I got the coat from so will try to exchange it and get some of those sleepsuits at the same time...and remember to look at sizes haha

I did this too, bought all 0-3 months and was very pleased with myself when all washed and laundered by 32w ish. Then had a mini panic when my sister said that's lovely, but what is baby going to wear when newborn? Cue madly online shopping, realising 'up to one month' and 'newborn' vests and baby grows were totally out of stock everywhere, dragging my DH to nearest supermarkets and finding the same, then to an out of town Next and M&S where we picked up 1 pack in each shop as that is all they had. Mini hormonal meltdown in the car park followed about how useless we are going to be at parenting if we can't even clothe our baby and they're not even here yet!

A few weeks later a couple of friends visited to lend some of their equipment (pre-arranged prior to mini meltdown and lack of clothing realisation) and, without knowing or us asking, casually threw in some baby clothes saying "you've probably got loads already but thought you might like these just in case..."

Now we are overwhelmed with newborn, 'up to one month' and 'first size' vests and baby grows! Hurrah!

Have you got any friends with babies or little ones who could be your unknowing (or knowing) saviours?

I'm also a FTM, 39+5....feeling ready as we'll ever be.

Boringnamechanging · 24/09/2020 09:35

Mine 7lb9 and 8lb4 never fitted into newborn they were far to long. We had up to 1 month as first size. eBay often has great bundles of newborn clothes as they don't get worn out so you could get some of those incase.

ImaSababa · 24/09/2020 09:37

I bought 0-3 stuff for what turned out to be a teeny baby! She looked like a samurai warrior in voluminous robes for the first few days until I could order some smaller stuff!

ChampooPapi · 24/09/2020 10:24

@Sunnytimes04 these are perfect for you and goods quality without breaking the bank. Plus they finally have newborn available after not having that size for a while so I'd snap them up if I were you

Look at the weight guides on the labels before buying - that’s more useful than the “first size”, “newborn”, “0-3” etc as the actual weights differ between shops. Yes you’ll get people saying that their baby was in 0-3 from birth but that will be a tiny minority. My son was 8lb 12 and 95th centile for height and still wore newborn and up to 1 month for the first few weeks. I think he moved to 0-3 at about 4-5 weeks when he was around 10/11lbs.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/09/2020 10:27

0-1 months from H&M and Next are perfect for first size. Don't get much though.

Be mindful of coats though - babies shouldn't wear coats in carseat.

ChampooPapi · 24/09/2020 10:32

@FolkSongSweet this is so true. Even a 9 pound baby will fit into newborn and they nearly always loose weight that first week post birth especially if breast feeding and establishing that. I often think some of these baby going straight into 0--3 months claims from people are from mums and dads who have washed the clothes at 90 or something in preparation and shrunk them 🤷‍♀️. Babies, especially newborns, need to be in suits that fit them too and are not baggy. So sure you can dress a longer or heavier baby in 0-3 months but they are swamped.

I keep.seeing photos on here of newborns in hospital in huge swamping baby grows so maybe these are the same mums who will say in 6 months time 'oh mine went straight into 0-3 months and it was fine' . But those grows definitely do not fit them

Caspianberg · 24/09/2020 10:38

I would only get some sleepsuits and vests in newborn to cover the first few weeks.

Cardigans, coats etc are fine to just turn the sleeve up.

And yes they can’t wear coats in car seats btw, so I wouldn’t worry about exchanging the 0-3, he can wear that out in pram fine. In car seat just add cardigan, hat if cool, and then strap in. Then layer blankets over the straps if cold. You can see online about coats and car seat debate

Caspianberg · 24/09/2020 10:41

@ChampooPapi - mine really did fit 0-3 at birth! I squeezed him in the newborn for a week just to get use out of them, but he was long! 8lb8, 53cm.
He’s now 72cm at 4months so grew quickly. In 6-9 months mainly now.

DappledThings · 24/09/2020 11:34

I didn't think this through either. Had to walk round Sainsbury's with day old DC1 looking for newborn size sleepsuits on the way home from hospital.

Superscientist · 24/09/2020 11:57

Upto 1 month in sainsburys is up to 10 lb and first size in asda is up to 9lb.
My little one was 6lb 13 she's nearly 8 weeks and still in first size /1month.

We had 5 or 7 vests and 5 sleepsuits in first size in advance then bought an extra 5 or 7 vests and 6 more sleepsuits when she arrived.

Superscientist · 24/09/2020 11:58

Sorry nearly 7 weeks. I think we will have another 7-10 days before they are too small
