glucose tolerance test - what to expect?

Have to go for glucose tolerance test and not sure what to expect. I've been told not to eat from midnight and I can queue for a test in the morning. What happens next? I assume once they've taken the first sample, they give me sugar and retest? Is that right? How long do I have to wait - I'll have a toddler in tow, so am hoping I won't have too long to wait!
I've been eating far too much sweet stuff and really hope I haven't given myself gestational diabetes!

Nothing to it really. Blood test, sweet drink, wait 2 hours (if I remember right), then another blood test (bloomin vampires!). Take some snacks, toys and books for littley, there will probably be other mums with tots in tow so get chatting if you can. O and don't have anything sweet, even fruit or fruit juice, from teatime the day before as that can also swing the results.

When I had it done (about 18 months ago) I was lucky because I was pretty much the first appt. I fasted as you have been instructed, they took the first blood sample and then I had to drink this revolting orange flavour glucose drink and sit (can't remember how long, no longer than an hr certainly) in the waiting room until they took the next test. I'd take things to entertain your toddler and something to eat for afterwards (I was 34 weeks and RAVENOUS).

I had this, and didn't take anything to eat afterwards, went into town and fainted dramatically on the doorstep of an Italian restaurant. If I had tried for months I couldn't have chosen a better place to faint. Mind you it was a bit difficult to get away - I had a free meal, sitting on a sofa with my feet up, a free glass of red wine (very good for the baby apparently) the offer of a bed for a rest, a lift to the car park, some flowers and a present for the baby. Then I had to promise to visit them again after he was born. I din - more free food, more presents.... I felt like a character out of Don Camillo!

Thanks for replies.... Just noticed on my blood test form, it says my glucose is 6.2. Anyone know what that means? Is that bad?

6.2 sounds fine to me, fasting glucose over about 7 is cause for concern if i remember right
