12 Week Scan Results - Advice Needed

Hiya,

I’m a 37 and 51 week year old, experiencing my first pregnancy. I have a bmi of 42 and an underactive thyroid. I had my 12 week scan at the start of this week which was absolute wonderful to see our baby for the first time.

Nuchal measurements came in at 1.8mm and then I had bloods taken for a combined screening test.

The midwife rang me today to say I was classed as high risk with a 1/21 chance of downs. My PAP-A came back as a low reading too of 0.24. The whole conversation went by in a blur as I was felt really overwhelmed.

I have been very upset since getting in from work and my partner has now booked an NIPT scan for this Sat. I’m so Unbelievably worried / sad after today and the thought of an invasive diagnostic following an NIPT is causing nothing but anxiety.

Anyone gone through a similar experience? Any guidance or advice?

Thank you, Livvy xx

Sorry to hear that you’re worried. Hopefully the test will give you more information. I haven’t been in your shoes, but please remember that 1/21 still means 20/21 chance of not having Downs.

Hi @OMC2209 sorry to hear you're going through this worrying time. I myself got the same phonecall this week with a 1 in 10 chance of downs. I'll be 33 at term, my nt was 2.9 and bloods were slightly elevated but not massively, so it seemed a bit odd to us it came back as such high risk but midwife said the combination of them all was just high enough to make it that way. We decided nipt wouldn't put us fully at ease so today I had the cvs and am waiting for the results. It was a bit uncomfortable and I've been sore since but its passing and the mc rate is v low esp with an experienced consultant. Im glad i went through with it despite anxiety over my decision as I couldnt stand another 6 months of worry and we'd rather know so we can plan. Not sure if that's helpful but just wanted to share my experience. Hopefully the nipt will reassure you enough so try not to stress too much, but i know how hard that is! Wishing you the best of luck x

SherHar123 · 11/09/2020 13:47

Hi, I am in a similar position to you although slightly different results. I will be 34 at term and there was nothing that stood out in my results to indicate why I would be in high risk. Very confusing. Anyway, wishing you all the best for your results, keep us posted. I have had the nipt blood test so just waiting on results also but it is such a worrying time x

OMC2209 · 11/09/2020 17:46

Ahhhh thank you both for the messages. It’s just such a terribly worrying time with all these variables and probabilities. Please do let me know how everything goes with your results xxx

Hi ladies, still waiting for my blood results, I was hoping they'd be back by this morning but perhaps it is a little early. Feeling a bit in limbo sometimes :-/ Hope you're both holding up ok. I hope your scan went ok on Sat Livvy. Will let you know when I hear something xx

Zigzag19 · 14/09/2020 17:09

The waiting is just so difficult, never have I felt time pass so slowly and just so many thoughts go through your head. I hope you're both holding up ok.
I thankfully had good news this afternoon and my cvs results came back all clear, it's going to take a while for it to sink in I think as I'd prepared myself for the worst.
I hope you both get your results quickly and its good news too, look after yourselves in the meantime and do keep us updated xx

OMC2209 · 14/09/2020 17:46

@Zigzag19 and @SherHar123

I went for my NIPT scan yesterday instead of Sat due to staffing levels.

Ahhhhh I am over the moon to gear you’ve had good news @Zigzag19 and @SherHar123 please do update about results. The waiting is insane but I remain hpeful ❤️

@Zigzag19 Ah, I am so pleased for you. You can now go back to enjoying your pregnancy (once it's all sunk in!). Do you have to have any additional scans or any thing or will your pregnancy be monitored as a 'normal' one is now? So happy for you :-)

Praying that they will call with my result tomorrow. @OMC2209 I hope that the wait for your results isn't too long xx

Zigzag19 · 14/09/2020 21:37

Thanks both, I have my fingers crossed you both get good news soon too.
@SherHar123 yes it should go back to being 'normal' monitoring now. However the consultant also noticed baby has a 'single umbilical artery' (not something I'd heard of before!) they said its most likely just one of those things, but I'll have to wait and see if the anomaly scan picks up anything else from that...I'm hoping not! Either way I feel my biggest hurdle is crossed with todays good news so staying positive and trying to relax after such a worrying week.
Thinking of you both xx

blanchmange50 · 14/09/2020 21:42

I have had mixed results with screening, my DC #3 I was told had a 1/24 chance of DS, we went for CVS and he was fine, had another where is was told it was 1 in 2 and sadly for us was positive for DS but the scan at 12 weeks showed up a number of issues so i knew...then i was told for my last one that he was 1 in 4 for DS and had a CVS and he is fine too. You may be high risk and fine however you may be told your low risk as was my sister who ended up with a boy who had DS. I hope you get positive news

blanchmange50 · 14/09/2020 21:43

Zigzag19 I had a single artery too with my last DC and I was just closely monitored during my pregnancy. Extra scans which is quite nice

SherHar123 · 16/09/2020 14:49

@Zigzag19 I've never heard of that either. Doesn't sound like they are too worried and is probably not too concerning for you after the past week!
@blanchmange50 sounds like you have had lots of experience with these tests. I do wonder how they come up with their scoring as nurses weren't really able to explain it to me, just said that I was within 'normal range for all my results 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Any way I spoke to hospital yesterday and they said that they are expecting the result tomorrow, so fingers crossed not much longer to wait x

SherHar123 · 16/09/2020 20:11

Hi all, just to say I got my results back and they are showing very low risk! The blood test cannot give a definite no but my risk has changed to 1 in 1 million of the baby having DS.

@OMC2209 wishing you the best for ypur results too xx

Zigzag19 · 16/09/2020 21:03

@SherHar123 oh I'm so pleased for you, that's great news!

@blanchmange50 that's reassuring to hear your experience with the single artery, I'm guessing it will depend how my anomaly scan goes but yes if it means extra scans that's a bonus!

@OMC2209 hope you're holding up ok and get some good news soon too x

OMC2209 · 16/09/2020 21:52

@SherHar123 and @Zigzag19 thank you for the supportive words. We’ve decided to come away for a few days and it’s doing my mind the world of good. I’m so so nervous it’s unreal and I’m also terrified of it coming back an inconclusive :( But I’m trying to be hopeful that we get good news and can start to enjoy ourselves just a little more. I am so happy for you both with the good results, it’s what is so needed in such a turbulent year!!! Big hugs xxxx

Hi, I was just wondering how long your test results took to come back. The midwife phoned me yesterday after my 12 weeks scan 2 days earlier to tell me I was in the high risk category for our baby having Ds, I had the Harmony test done straight away and am now sick with worry.

SherHar123 · 18/09/2020 15:14

Hi @Rose5369 I had my bloods taken on the Tuesday and the results back on the Wednesday of the following week. It felt ok
Like a long wait. Wishing you all the best xx

SherHar123 · 18/09/2020 15:15

Sorry i meant to just say it felt like a long wait!

OMC2209 · 18/09/2020 16:09

@Rose5369 hi, I too am in the same position. 12 week scan on 8th, then 2 days later I had a call from the midwife to say I was high risk for DS. My partner and I decided to have the NIPT screening on 13th and we are waiting for the results. I totally get that sick to the bottom of your stomach feeling, but I’m trying to keep hopeful and am sending you loads of good luck vibes. Xx

@OMC2209 sending you good luck as well, waiting is horrible isn’t it. Xx

OMC2209 · 26/09/2020 21:38

@Zigzag19 @SherHar123 @Rose5369

Hello, we got our results this week from the Harmony (NIPT) screening and we got good news. It felt like the longest wait of our lives, so we are so very relieved to have heard. Hope you are all ok xxx

Rose5369 · 26/09/2020 21:42

That’s brilliant @OMC2209 I am really pleased for you, we also received our results and had good news, our risk is now 1 in 1 million 😃

Zigzag19 · 26/09/2020 21:54

So pleased to hear you've both had good news! xx

Inkpaperstars · 26/09/2020 23:29

So glad you have all had good news, and hopefully this thread will be found in the future by others in a similar position and reassure them.

Rose5369 · 27/09/2020 07:16

@Inkpaperstars yes hopefully as reassurance was what I was trying to find when I found this thread whilst waiting for my results
