Heartbeat at 6+5, no heartbeat at 9

Has anyone else had this? This is my second pregnancy. First ended in MMC in June (found out at 8 weeks, based on measurements the embryo probably didn't develop past 6 weeks). I found out I was pregnant again in August. This time, I had a scan at 6+5 and saw the heartbeat. Yesterday, at 9 weeks, my gynaecologist said the embryo had grown perfectly, but there was no heartbeat. Based on the measurements, she said the heart must have just stopped, probably in the last 24 hours. I guess my question is: I know there's no chance of the heart starting up again, but is there a chance the doctor missed it on the ultrasound? I'm due to have another scan next week to 'check', but I suppose this is just to confirm before MC management, rather than a check to see if anything's changed. I think I'm just trying to come to terms with the news, I thought the chances of MC after seeing a heartbeat were low. Any words of experience or advice would be really welcome right now.

Unfortunately, your chances of miscarrying after seeing a heartbeat are lowER, but they are still there. It is very unlikely that they missed it. Im so sorry for your loss x

EllieJai44 · 10/09/2020 07:49

I had this, we saw a heartbeat at 6 weeks, then again at 8 weeks and went for a private scan at 10 and half weeks to be told baby had died at 9 and half weeks, was perfect looking, just no movements or heart beat :( I'm so sorry, it is unlikely they have made a mistake, I know I clung to any hope I could find but a follow up scan showed the same. I've had 3 miscarriages in total and that one was by far the hardest one.

But know there is light at the end, I'm now 21 weeks pregnant with a little boy, who so far is growing great!

Take time for yourself mama and take any support given to you xx

Hi @sunbees I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I had a MMC a few years ago. We saw a heartbeat at 7+4 and then when I went for a second scan at 9+4, they said the baby's heart had stopped at 8+4. I was devastated as I also thought the chances of a miscarriage were negligible after seeing a heartbeat. It's very unlikely the doctor would have missed it sadly but they like to confirm it with a second scan, probably so that they can then discuss management with you if necessary. I'm now 32 weeks pregnant with my rainbow baby so there's no reason to think it will happen again. That doesn't stop the pain now, I know. Thanks

sunbees · 10/09/2020 08:07

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with me, I was hoping to feel less alone, and now I do Flowers I love that there are rainbow babies in your stories. That gives me real hope, while helping me start to let go of this strange false hope that there must have been a mistake. I'm so grateful for the support. Wishing you all the best xx

@sunbees hey, just wondering how all went.
I'm in the same boat. 2 wks ago measuring 8+6 with heartbeat and today expecting to be measuring 8+6 but was measuring 9+2 but no heartbeat. The consultant herself seemed stumped. I'm devastated. Back next wk for confirmation 😥 she wanted to go through my options but I said I wanted to rescan in a wk. Clinging on a tiny bit of hope 😥💔

Hi, I'm sorry you're experiencing this. The exact same has happened to me last year. I had a scan at 6 weeks, all looked great and heart beat detected. I went for another scan at 9+3 as we planned to start telling family as we had a holiday booked with them the following week. Although I knew it was a possibility, I went into the scan quite naively thinking everything would be ok as we'd already seen a heartbeat. They found no heartbeat but baby was measuring just over 9 weeks so it appeared it had just happened which was hard to swallow.

I was told most likely explanation was a chromosome/genetic issue. I was also told that at 9 weeks you would expect to see a very visible heartbeat (apparently once the baby gets over a certain size the heartbeat is easily detectable).

I had surgery a week later and during that week my body still hadn't registered that the baby had died.

It's really devastating and the odds of losing a pregnancy after seeing a heartbeat at 6 weeks fall to something like 5% so sadly we are in the very small minority.

I hope you recover well, I know emotionally it takes more time 💐

My last loss was like this, I went for a scan at 8 weeks, baby was measuring 8+5 but no heartbeat. I had the D&C 2 weeks later on the 2nd of May.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I have a rainbow baby growing now, I hope you have the same luck xxx

sunbees · 20/09/2020 16:00

hey @2alreadywantanother , I'm so sorry you're going through this. I had the check-up scan on Thursday at what would have been 10+1 and the embryo had become somehow shrunken/less defined. I had a D&C on Friday. Take care of yourself in the coming weeks, mama.

@calimommy , I'm sorry for your loss. Congrats on your rainbow baby, I hope everything is going well for you. Can I ask if you had any tests before you tried again? My doctor offered me a referral for blood tests. It would be good to know if I should take progesterone/aspirin in any future pregnancy... I realise that at this stage - having had two miscarriages - there's nothing to suggest more than bad luck, but I'm interested if anyone else decided to do tests. Same question to @EllieJai44 and @MoreGinPlease2020 xx

God love u @sunbees how are you feeling since. I know everyone is different. My friend had 1 2 wks ago and sat under it and only getting out and about now. I don't want that. I mind 3 other kids and 1 I'm not taking for 2 wks, the other 2 I'm taking mon and Tues and then see how I feel next wk. Try and keep some normality.

calimommy · 20/09/2020 16:09

@sunbees this was my third MC. I already had investigations after the second MC and nothing was noted. I've also had 3 children (Baby, MC, MC, Baby, Baby, MC) and nothing was noted in the histology from the third MC so overall it's just been bad luck. Hopefully this one works out! I'm 13 weeks and all my losses were before 11 weeks so I feel as relaxed as I can be.
After my second MC I was prescribed aspirin and progesterone for the next time I got pregnant- so I took those for my second baby and all was well. Then I had a different Dr for my third baby and she didn't want me to take those that time, although I was already 8 weeks by the time I met her and you start taking aspirin and progesterone much earlier in the process.

Good luck xx

calimommy · 20/09/2020 16:13

@2alreadywantanother I was absolutely fine after my D&C. Not even sore. I didnt even bleed for 2 ish weeks and then it was just a regular period type bleed.

2alreadywantanother · 20/09/2020 16:17

Ah good, sorry you had to go through all that. I'm imagining the worst here 🙈
I wonder should I mention been prescribed anything to my gp. I know this is my 1st mc, I have 2 children but I'm 40 so time really isnt on my side

bunnyonthemantle · 20/09/2020 16:26

Yes I think my scan was around 7 weeks. Then had a tiny amount of spotting at 10 weeks, went for a scan and baby had no heart beat. Probably stopped a couple of days before. Didn't have any more bleeding so had and erpc at 11 weeks. The sonographer told me that what you see on a scan one day may not be the same the next day. That was in Jan and I'm 30 weeks at the moment. Don't give up hope.

IHateCoronavirus · 20/09/2020 16:41

Good luck to you all on this thread. Flowers
This time five years ago I was pregnant and beyond terrified after the stillbirth of DD.
My rainbow baby is now four and has brought with him so much joy. One step in front of the other. It can be a long and lonely road x

2alreadywantanother · 20/09/2020 16:43

Thanks ladies. It's great to hear the stories with positive endings

EllieJai44 · 20/09/2020 16:44

@sunbees I was offered referral which we said yes to, as far as we are aware we are still on the list for this referral, therefore since February we have not heard a thing about it, depending on your area it can be a very long wait, ours warned us it was at least a 6 month wait and that was before coronavirus hit.....we decided to give it one more try in hope we had been extremely unlucky 3 times, the only thing I did differently is take low dose asprin- 75mg daily

MoreGinPlease2020 · 20/09/2020 18:41

@sunbees I wasn't referred for tests as it was my first miscarriage. I did however self prescribe aspirin as soon as I fell pregnant this time. I had gone for fertility tests privately after the miscarriage which showed low AMH and the consultant suggested I take extra vitamin E and D. I also took ubiquinol for months before we ttc this time - of course none of it may have made any difference but I felt like I was doing something which was important to me.

AlwaysLatte · 20/09/2020 18:58

Sorry to hear your story. I had two MCs too, one at 8 weeks and one at 6 weeks. I do have two strapping boys of 12 and 10 now though. I had injections with them which might have helped them stick, after the miscarriages I was offered it - maybe worth asking?

Fizzl I know this is an old post but did you have another scan x

Fizzl · 30/07/2025 08:19

Hi @Kkk17the scan I had at 9 weeks was a private scan. They sent me to epu where they did another scan the next day just to confirm it was a miscarriage. Hope that answers your question? If you’re looking for reassurance I’ve gone on to have 2 children since my first MMC so it’s all worked out ok in the end but it was a really hard time when it happened. Hope you’re ok x

Kkk17 · 30/07/2025 08:24

Fizzl thank you for getting back to me I had 2 scan with a heart beat and one without thats probably why they haven't offered another one x
